Pokémon Legends Arceus Looks More Like Monster Hunter Than BOTW

In the months preceding Pokémon Legends: Arceus’ release, many Nintendo fans have likened the upcoming game to Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. At first glance, its open-world and art style certainly resemble BOTW’s gameplay and graphics. However, the game’s most recent trailer from Nintendo’s Direct Livestream suggests that Legends may resemble Monster Hunter more than Legend of Zelda.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus will introduce the Hisui region, also known as feudal Sinnoh. Trainers will wander through the wilds to catch and battle against wild Pokémon, though returning to the town will apparently be a regular occurrence. Breath of the Wild does not place as much significance in its towns and cities. Players are rewarded for venturing throughout Hyrule and journeying off the beaten path. Ingredients, hidden quests, Shrines, and powerful weapons are all possible to find in the wilds. Though Monster Hunter lacks a traditional open-world, players will repeatedly journey back to their village or stronghold to retrieve quests, trade, improve or craft new weapons and armor, and gather friends to embark on new hunts. From the gameplay Nintendo has revealed, Pokémon Legends: Arceus may mirror these functions.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus’ central town appears to be the focus of activity, and is filled with useful shops and NPCs. The Pokémon Lab is also located in town, which will likely supply players with their starter Pokémon. Whether Legends intends to follow the formulaic plot progression of other Pokémon games, it’s likely the starting town will hold a good level of importance (as will the Professor). Monster Hunter models itself this way too, stationing vital NPCs, shops, and matchmaking centers within its strongholds. Players make the most progress in the game’s story by turning in bounties and conversing with whoever is in charge. Breath of the Wild is based mostly in the wild. Players will often leave one location to accomplish a single task, and pursue a dozen more discovered out in the world.

Monster Hunter: Rise’s Conflict Is Closer To Pokémon Legends: Arceus’

The main conflict of Pokémon Legends: Arceus appears to focus on the rampage of enraged Pokémon. Trainers and their parties will face powerful Pokémon with red eyes angered by an unknown source. These Pokémon could threaten the villagers, as evidenced by the “Pokémon are terrifying creatures!” dialogue the Legends trailer emphasized. Monster Hunter focuses on similar conflicts to Pokémon, with players defeating raging monster bosses that threaten the village. Breath of the Wild has a more grand scale threat in the form of Calamity Ganon and the Divine Beasts, but lacks smaller threats beyond mini-bosses and enemies spawning in the wilds.

One of the comparisons between Pokémon Legends: Arceus and Breath of the Wild have been their open worlds. However, there is no evidence that Legends’ open world will be filled with as many activities as BOTW offered. Players will catch Pokémon in the overworld and engage in battles and new stealth mechanics. Beyond these pastimes, there’s no evidence to suggest other activities that Legends’ world will offer. Breath of the Wild contained a dynamic open world with countless activities and threats that kept players on their toes. Unless Pokémon Legends: Arceus matches this, its open world could work against it.

No matter which game Pokémon Legends: Arceus resembles at launch, this style of Pokémon game will still be a massive leap forward for the franchise. Several new gameplay functions will be making their debut, alongside new regional forms and brand-new Pokémon. Whether Monster Hunter: Rise or Breath of the Wild holds more similarities, Pokémon fans will be in for an exciting new experience in Hisui.
