Pokémon Sword & Shield Isle of Armors Magikarp Cant Even Swim

The Pokémon Sword & Shield DLC The Isle of Armor introduced over 100 new Pokémon into the game, but Magikarp is still unable to swim properly. Fans have praised Game Freak’s decision to give each Pokémon their own unique animations, both in the wild and after they’ve been caught, which is why some were disappointed to see that not only is Magikarp’s animation the same all the way across the board, but it also completely lacks the ability to swim like a regular Water-Type Pokémon.

After many fans were outraged at the removal of the National Dex from the Sword & Shield franchise, it was exciting to see the return of many old Pokémon as well as the additional of several new ones. The Isle of Armor is one of two DLCs Game Freak has announced, with The Crown Tundra next in line. Both of these expansions look to introduce over two hundred Pokémon into the Galar region while also providing players with two new Wild Areas to explore.

The Isle of Armor features new territory for trainers to explore, and most notably includes a wide span of ocean to cover. Unsurprisingly, players will likely run into a Magikarp sooner or later as they surf the waves. However, for a Water-Type Pokémon themed after a fish, Magikarp seems to have a lot of trouble staying afloat. Rather than actually swimming through the water like a Tentacool or Starmie, Magikarp flops on the surface instead. Its animation is identical to what players see during a wild Pokémon encounter.

In fact, Magikarp is the only water Pokémon in Sword & Shield’s DLC which lacks a proper swimming animation. While most other Pokémon at least bob up and down at the waters’ surface, clearly submerged, Magikarp has opted to struggle atop the water as if it could drown. Pokémon Pearl’s Pokédex entry for Magikarp emphasizes how this Pokémon is completely unable to swim against even slow-moving currents. It’s possible the ocean is just too strong for Magikarp to maneuver through.

Pokémon Shield’s entry only seems to highlight this fish Pokémon’s complete inability to swim properly by explaining how Magikarp is so weak, it often gets easily pushed along by rivers and currents. It seems Game Freak may have taken into account the history of Magikarp’s inability to do anything more than Splash around and depicted this behavior literally. This Pokémon is as agile in water as it is on land, meaning that it can do nothing more than flop around in a struggle. Magikarp’s behavior does prompt the question about how, as a fish, it’s able to survive in the wild if it’s completely unable to submerge itself underwater to begin with.

Isle of Armor has proven to be a very successful expansion on the core Pokémon Sword & Shield titles with its slew of new features and activities for players to enjoy. It does seem that some of the Pokémon players can find in the new Wild Area almost don’t belong in their respected habitat. If a Magikarp is unable to swim properly in the ocean, it’s unlikely it will ever truly find a calm enough body of water where it can do more than splash about on the surface.
