Once in a while, the creators behind Pokémon’s television presence release a special series separate from the main series anime. Some fantastic examples include Pokémon Origins and Pokémon Generations. Earlier this year, they premiered a new anime series based in the Galar region: Twilight Wings.

This series is a seven-episode story that takes place immediately before the events of Sword & Shield, with each episode telling a slightly different story, connected by a Taxi Driver and his Corviknight. Each episode focuses on a different character, including some Gym Leaders and even Champion Leon, who battles in a match in the final episode, opening the events of the Generation VIII games. The overarching plot of the series follows a sick boy in a hospital named John, who wants to see a Championship match. Naturally, the seven episodes were ranked by their IMDb user score.

7 Buddy (6.9)

It’s no surprise that this episode, the third in the series, ranks the lowest, considering it focuses on a character many find annoying and awful. That character is Champion Leon’s little brother, Hop, who serves as the main rival for the player in the games. Many have found Hop to be clingy, irritating, and unhelpful, raising the ever-recurring question of what makes a good rival.

This episode follows Hop trying to learn to become a better trainer by studying his brother’s matches. He loses track of his Wooloo after it feels unappreciated. Eventually, the pair reunite, and the episode ends.

6 Assistant (7.6)

The fifth episode in the series is this one, which focuses on Chairman Rose’s assistant, Oleana. The episode opens with her reminiscing about her younger days when she studied the Gigantamax phenomenon. It goes on to follow a day in Oleana’s life, from managing workers to attending meetings and more.

During a Taxi ride, Oleana explains the difference between Dynamax and Gigantamax to the driver, and Chairman Rose is proud. It’s a nice episode that shows a stark contrast to Oleana’s role as a deranged villain in the games. Here, she’s shown as a hardworking and ambitious confidant to one of the most powerful figures in the region.

5 Moonlight (7.9)

This episode is the second-to-last in the series and follows John’s friend Tommy and Gym Leader Allister. The two are talking about a fight that John and Tommy had, and how Tommy is looking to get a ticket to the Championship match to make it up to John. He asks Allister if he can provide one, but Allister is sorry to say that he can’t.

Allister instead recommends that the two talk it out, so Tommy and Allister head back to the hospital and talk to John. The episode ends with Leon receiving John’s letter, which partially caused the fight in the first place.

4 Letter (8.0)

This episode is the first in the series and sets up the events of later episodes, specifically the aforementioned letter. John sends this letter to Chairman Rose, expressing his dream of seeing Champion Leon battle live in person. Rose and his assistant, Oleana, are in the hospital visiting patients, and John misses his chance to give Rose the letter before he leaves.

Fortunately, Rose turns back and receives the letter before boarding the Flying Taxi and leaving. The episode ends with shots of the various gym leaders, Hop, and Leon engaged in various activities, previewing events of future episodes.

3 Training (8.1)

This episode is the second in the series and follows Bea, the Fighting-type Gym Leader who lost to Leon in the beginning of the previous episode. It shows her training in order to beat him next time. A cool scene shows her facing down a wild Rhydon. She also spurs with her Machamp in hand-to-hand combat, which is interesting as humans themselves don’t typically fight Pokémon.

Her and her Pokémon eventually take shelter in a cave from some rain, where a cave-in traps them. They escape at the end of the episode, before meeting back up with the Taxi Driver who makes an appearance in every episode.

2 Early-Evening Waves (8.1)

This episode is one of the most visually-appealing in the series, following Gym Leader Nessa as she recounts some memories of meeting a Milotic in a lake. It follows a day in her life, where she meets with Chairman Rose and Oleana, the former of which comments that she basically has to make a choice between being a model and being a gym leader.

Upset by these comments, she meets with her friend Sonia and ponders the decision. She eventually stands up to the Chairman’s comments and proudly declares that she’s capable of being both a career-woman and a model.

1 Sky (9.3)

The reason this episode, which is the final in the series, ranks the highest by user vote, is probably due in part to the epic battle sequences that it contains. It follows the sick boy, John, who finally meets with Champion Leon, by mistake. The two depart for the stadium together, where John gets to remain on the field while Leon battles Raihan, his rival.

An epic fight ensues, with each of them pitting their extremely-powerful Pokémon against one another. Both trainers Gigantamax their Pokémon — Leon chooses his Charizard after Raihan chooses his Duraludon — and the episode ends with the two locked in a heated fight, setting up the opening to Sword & Shield.
