From throughout the Pokémon anime, what do each of the characters represent, and what does that say about their biggest fans?

Over the course of the Pokémon anime’s twenty-one years, many characters joined Ash Ketchum in his journey around the Pokémon world. They all contributed something to Ash’s story, enriching it with their point of view and experience. And while some made more of an impact than others, they’re all unique, making them instantly memorable for Pokémon fans.

And it’s precisely these fans that can often see themselves reflected on these characters. Perhaps it’s not a perfect match, but the key players in Pokémon all have a distinct personality trait that makes them stand out. Audiences can relate to that, increasing the attachment they feel for this venerable and beloved franchise.

10 Goh: You’re Calm And Collected

Goh is the latest of Ash’s companions, a stylish city boy who stands in stark contrast to the hero from Pallet Town. Unlike Ash, who enjoys jumping to the adventure with little to no care for the consequences, Goh is much more analytical and careful when assessing a situation. He has great respect for theory but also recognizes the importance of practicing.

Goh is overconfident and self-assured, which might be scary to some people. However, he’s also loyal and will not hesitate to intervene if he sees an injustice taking place.

9 Sophocles: You Follow Your Own Path

Sophocles is a sweet and intelligent young boy and one of Ash’s classmates in Alola. He has a passion for inventing helpful devices and spends much of his time focused on them. He gets so caught up in his inventions that he can often come across as rude or unfriendly. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth.

A Trainer of Electric-type Pokémon, Sophocles is wise beyond his years. He enjoys collecting useless trivia and has a passion for knowledge. He likes what he likes and doesn’t care about what others think of it.

8 Serena: You’re Expressive

Serena is kind and polite but also quite rebellious. She tends to react strongly when something meaningful happens in her life, in both positive and negative ways. When she lost her first Pokémon Showcase, for example, she cut her hair short, a sign of her strengthened resolve.

Serena expresses herself in many different ways. She loves clothes and accessories and sees fashion as a way to enhance and show off her and her Pokémon’s individuality.

7 Cilan: You’re Perceptive

Cilan is a Pokémon Connoisseur and Ash’s male companion in the Unova region. He’s perceptive and intuitive and can read into people’s personalities with ease. He’s very empathetic and usually finds the best way to approach people and situations. He’s gentle and understanding, making him the ideal person to deal with delicate matters.

Cilan is the wisest of the Unova group, acting as a guide and mentor for the much more childish Ash and Iris. He offers helpful advice and emotional support to his friends.

6 May: You Love To Explore New Places

May travels around the Hoenn region with Ash, Brock, and her little brother Max. She is unique when it comes to Ash’s traveling partners because, at first, she’s only interested in the traveling aspect of a Pokémon journey. She has no set purpose in mind, and her priority is only to explore her home region and discover everything it has to offer.

At times, May even uses her hand as a camera and pretends she’s the host of a traveling show. At times she gets so caught up in her fantasy that she puts herself in danger, like when a giant boulder was coming her way, and she kept “recording” the experience.

5 Dawn: You’re Confident In Yourself

Dawn aims to become a Top Pokémon Coordinator, just like her mother. She’s a native of the Sinnoh region and Ash’s traveling partner during all of the Diamond & Pearl series. Dawn is confident and determined and chooses to focus on her bright future rather than dwell on past mistakes.

Dawn’s confidence sometimes suffers, especially when she loses a Pokémon Competition. She never loses her focus, though, and while she goes through some rough patches in her journey, she always comes back with her resolve strengthened.

4 Team Rocket: You Remain Undeterred

Team Rocket certainly has more heart than brains. They are the de-facto antagonists of the show, known for their clumsiness and obsession with catching Ash’s Pikachu. They go to great lengths to achieve their purpose, often coming up with creative but ultimately useless gadgets and machines.

Jessie, James, and Meowth may not be the best trio in Team Rocket, but they’re the most persistent. They keep trying even though they keep failing. They never learn from their mistakes, but they also refuse to let their failures stop them from going forward.

3 Brock: You’re A Traditional Romantic

Brock is arguably Ash’s most memorable companion. He explored four different regions with Ash and is the longest-serving companion in the franchise. He’s famous, or perhaps infamous, for his devotion towards pretty women. Although usually levelheaded, he’ll become hopeless and over-emotional at the sight of a pretty girl.

Brock also enjoys traditional household activities, such as sewing, cooking, and cleaning, and even engaged in a rivalry of sorts with Delia Ketchum’s house Pokémon, Mimey. Brock’s main desire is to find a beautiful woman to marry and settle down with. On many occasions, he even declared that he would stop traveling with Ash if he met the love of his life.

2 Misty: You’re Not Afraid To Speak Your Mind

Misty is possibly Ash’s most explosive companion. She has her own way of seeing things and has passionate reactions when something annoys or displeases her. Picky, sensitive, and sometimes grumpy, she always speaks her mind to the point where she can come across as intense or overbearing. She strongly dislikes Bug-type Pokémon and isn’t afraid to vocally express her reservations.

Misty’s fiery personality stands out when someone gets critical of her beloved Water-type. She will always defend Water Pokémon and considers them all “cute,” even those who are positively not.

1 Ash: You Never Give Up

Ash Ketchum is the poster child for not giving up. He wants to be the very best like no one ever was and goes out of his way to achieve it. Enthusiastic and adventurous, Ash is passionate about Pokémon and truly loves every member of his team. He always sees the best in everybody and is earnest to a fault. He’s also quite stubborn, which only makes him more determined in his journey.

Despite his many setbacks over the years, Ash remains focused on his goal of becoming a Pokémon Master. He doesn’t let his defeats deviate him from his ultimate goal, and while he’s eager to try new things, he never takes his eyes off the prize.
