Pokémons Gengar Is Now A Creepy Cozy Armchair

One of the most popular Pokémon in the history of the series has been turned into furniture, as a Gengar beanbag armchair is now available for purchase in Japan. Gengar debuted in Pokémon Red and Blue as one of the three original Ghost-type Pokémon in the franchise, alongside Gastly and Haunter.

The Pokémon franchise is the most profitable media enterprise of all time, beating out the likes of the MCU, Star Wars, and Hello Kitty. A big part of this is due to the merchandise surrounding the characters, with Pokémon appearing in all kinds of different products. There’s close to 900 pocket monsters in the roster, meaning there are endless opportunities when it comes to plushies, pins, clothing, and more. Having such a popular series with so many characters has resulted in some strange pieces of merchandise, such as the Metapod Pokémon sleeping bag for adults, which allows people to pretend they are hanging out in Viridian Forest when relaxing at home.

The next piece of oddball Pokémon merchandise involves one of the most famous ghosts in the series, with Famitsu reporting that a Gengar beanbag chair is now available to purchase in Japan. Up for sale from Cellutane, the Ghost/Poison-type Pokémon chair costs 25,990 yen to purchase, which is roughly $226/£168. The design is similar to that of the Ditto beanbag chair released in 2020, and together would make for a memorable furniture set. Unfortunately, none of the available storefronts ship outside of Japan, so international fans will have to jump through some extra hoops if they wish to sit on the Gengar beanbag chair.

Gengar is a popular choice for merchandise, with a Gengar Pokémon plush with a giant tongue released earlier this year. Gengar is a notable user of the Dream Eater move in the Pokémon video games, likely the connection that the manufacturer was going for with purchasers expected to stick their head inside its mouth to nap. The new Gengar chair is less invasive, simply sharing the colors and recognizable features of the Pokémon. The front of the Gengar beanbag chair has the pocket monster’s mischievous grin, while the top has its ears, and the back has the spikes that the Pokémon possesses on its body.

Gengar isn’t the first Pokémon to be turned into a beanbag seat, as both Snorlax and Ditto received new Pokémon beanbag iterations in 2021. The difference, in this case, is that Gengar’s body has been contorted into the shape of a chair. This made sense with Ditto, as it’s a shapeshifting Pokémon that can take a number of forms. The design choice doesn’t make as much sense with Gengar, though its ethereal form could be used as an explanation for its malleable body. The Pokédex entries in the Pokémon video games describe Gengar as a creature that mimics the shadows of a living person, which adds a creepy connotation to its cozy beanbag chair.
