Video games are increasingly being seen as a viable and respectable medium for telling stories. Video game writing has become considerably deeper, richer, and more thematic over the last two decades, and many video games are widely acclaimed for their exciting and emotional stories.
Of course, these games are rare. For every fantastic video game story, there are ten abysmal ones filled with laughable acting, horrible dialogue, and shallow stories that serve as little more than an excuse for shooting things. As a result, the gaming industry is filled with some truly deplorable, and often embarrassing, cutscenes that incite unintentional laughter.
10 Press F To Pay Respects (Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare)
While not exactly a cutscene in the traditional sense, this sequence still involves little more than walking up to a coffin and pressing f “to pay respects”. The mission is found in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, and it comes while the protagonist, Jack Mitchell, is attending his friend and fellow soldier’s funeral.
Jack approaches the coffin, and players are prompted to “press f to pay respects”. It’s a goofy gameplay element with an unintentionally hilarious prompt, and it quickly spread throughout the internet as a meme.
9 Killing Liza (Far Cry 3)
Far Cry 3 is a spectacular game, but it really falls apart in the end. The ending presents the player with two choices – kill your girlfriend Liza, or don’t. If the player spares Liza, then Jason leaves the island with his friends.
But if the player decides to kill Liza, then Citra kills Jason to complete the ritual. It’s such a bizarre and nonsensical ending that players questioned its very existence. This is a case of one ending clearly being the canonical ending, and the other being something shoehorned in for the sake of choice.
8 Read The Instruction Manual (Hotel Mario)
The Philips CD-i is widely regarded as one of the worst consoles in gaming history, and it is host to some truly deplorable titles (more on that in a bit). One of the worst games found on the then-state-of-the-art device was Hotel Mario, a puzzle video game widely lambasted for its horrible cutscenes.
In the introductory cutscene, Mario turns directly to the player, breaks the fourth wall, and asks them to read the instruction manual. It’s not right for Mario to talk, and watching him break the fourth wall is just creepy.
7 Muppet Monster Adventure (Muppet Monster Adventure)
Released in November of 2000 for the original PlayStation, Muppet Monster Adventure was co-developed by Magenta Software and Jim Henson Interactive. It’s a horror-themed Muppets movie, and it opens in spectacularly awful fashion with a cutscene involving a haunted tree.
Even though the game was released for the original PlayStation, the graphics are truly abysmal, complete with a hilarious-looking Kermit and lots of unnatural movements. The only saving grace here is the voice acting.
6 The Lovemaking (Ride to Rell: Retribution)
Widely regarded as one of the worst video games ever made, Ride to Rell: Retribution was met with widespread condemnation when released in June of 2013. The game tries to be Sons of Anarchy in video game form, but the absolutely atrocious gameplay and graphics, not to mention the casual misogyny, only resulted in enormous amounts of controversy.
The game is filled with some truly awful and embarrassing sex scenes, any one of which could be considered the silliest cutscene in gaming history.
5 Shadow The Hedgehog Intro (Shadow the Hedgehog)
The original Sonic the Hedgehog – and its sequels – were widely beloved. The gameplay was fast and intuitive, and collecting all the rings in a particular level proved one of the greatest challenges in early ’90s gaming. And then came Shadow the Hedgehog.
Shadow the Hedgehog is like Sonic the Hedgehog’s edgy older brother. The very first cutscene sees Sonic loading a gun in a weird bit of drama, and it was just far too much for fans who just wanted to run fast and collect some rings.
4 The Master Of Unlocking (Resident Evil)
The first Resident Evil, while a masterpiece of survival horror, also contains its fair share of embarrassing cutscenes. They are horrendous, complete with sloppy writing and some of the worst voice acting ever put to gaming.
In the game’s most infamous cutscene, Barry hands a lockpick to Jill Valentine and states, “It might come in handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you.” It’s some of the clunkiest exposition ever uttered, and the flat voice acting makes the atrocious dialogue even more horrid.
3 Fill Your Dark Soul With Light (Devil May Cry)
Capcom makes some stellar video games, but their cutscenes leave a lot to be desired. In the first Devil May Cry game, Dante approaches Trish, cradles her in his arms, and yells, “I should have been the one to fill your dark soul with light!”
It’s a horrible bit of dialogue, but it’s made even worse through the voice acting. It is totally flat and emotionless, and even worse, the actor’s voice clearly cracks while screaming “liiiiiight!” Could they not have done another take?
2 The Laughing (Final Fantasy X)
Final Fantasy X is one of the greatest video games ever made, but it will forever be scarred by one of the worst cutscenes in gaming history. The cutscene, of course, sees Tidus and Yuna throwing their heads back and laughing in the most exaggerated fashion possible.
The laughing is completely ridiculous, with Tidus, in particular, sounding like a dying animal. It’s supposed to be a cute moment between the two characters, but it will only leave viewers raising an eyebrow and gazing in utter bewilderment at the screen.
1 Anything From The CD-i Zelda Games
Back in 1993, The Legend of Zelda franchise made its way onto the Philips CD-i with Link: The Faces of Evil and Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon. These are often considered some of the worst video games ever made, and their cutscenes have long been memes.
The cutscenes are filled with crude animation that does a great disservice to the legendary Zelda name, and both the writing and voice acting are deplorable. This is gaming at its absolute worst.
