PS5 Consoles Fill Three 747s As Sony Flies Deliveries To Meet UK Demand

Reportedly, Sony air freighted PS5 consoles to the United Kingdom last week from Seoul, South Korea on three 747 jets, all in an effort to meet Christmas demand. This expensive means of transportation proves the hardware manufacturer is doing what it can to meet the high demand for PS5 amid the ongoing global shortage on parts. Yet, despite said shortage, PS5 continues moving millions of units.

As of September 30, 2021, the new console had crossed 13.4 million in sales, half a million shy of what PS4 achieved at the same period in its lifecycle. It seems safe to assume this particular shortcoming, slight as it is, can be attributed to the aforementioned semiconductor shortage. Regardless, Sony remains well on its way to achieving internal sales goals for the fiscal year ending on March 31, 2022. By next Spring, the Japanese giant estimates PS5 sales will have surpassed the 14.8 million milestone. Many may have scoffed at such a bold prediction earlier this year; however, the platform could hit its target long before the end of March.

To placate demand for PS5 hardware at Christmastime, The Sun (via VGC) reports that Sony recently filled three 747 jets with consoles and had them shipped from Seoul to the UK last week. The third flight landed on Sunday, October 31, The Sun claimed. Two identical planes touched down at London Heathrow Airport last week on Monday and Tuesday. Apparently, each of the three Boeing 747s was packed with 50 pallets worth of PlayStation 5 stock. While these supplies head to distribution centers across England, the publication heard from sources that Sony also plans on chartering an additional two jumbo jets full of consoles to the UK by the middle of November. (VGC posits this could explain the recent flux of PS5 console restocks at UK retailers such as Argos and Game.)

Speaking with VGC, Ampere Analysis Research Director Piers Harding-Rolls explained that companies typically shy away from air freighting goods due to the expense. He continued, “But firms can use it to overcome supply chain issues or meet demand at key times of the year as it gets consoles, in this case, from factories to stores much faster… Air freighting will help bring forward some stock of consoles but may result in a longer dry patch in early 2022 when reverting back to sea transport.”

Sony’s efforts in this regard gain added context when considering that semiconductor manufacturers like Toshiba expect the chip shortage to last through 2022. Intel predicted over the summer, however, that console stock may remain low until 2023. Either way, it seems Sony has a lock on how to meet its internal expectations as this year comes to a close.

Both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S have been supply constrained since hit stores approximately one year ago. At the very least, scalpers don’t appear to pose as much of a threat as they once did, suggesting things could soon take a turn for the better.
