PUBG Animated Project In The Works From Adi Shankar & Krafton Inc

Game developers KRAFTON Inc. have announced that they have partnered with auteur Adi Shankar to create an animated project based on their hugely popular video game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG). PUBG launched in 2017 and was an immediate hit on release, helping to popularize the Battle Royale genre of video games. Seeing multiple players battle it out on an ever-shrinking map, the genre has dominated the game industry over the last few years with the likes of Fortnite and Apex Legends reaching similar popularity, and the likes of Call of Duty and Battlefield also jumping on the bandwagon. Part of the great success of the genre stems from their popularity on streaming sites like Twitch, with PUBG alone being watched for over 20 million hours.

Shankar is known for both his independent ‘Bootleg’ series of one-shots based on popular franchises, including Punisher: Dirty Laundry and Power/Rangers, which take iconic characters and subverts them in a vein similar to Andy Warhol. He has also served as executive producer on films such as The Grey starring Liam Neeson and Dredd starring Karl Urban. Most recently, the auteur served as executive producer on Netflix’s critically acclaimed Castlevania animated series which recently concluded with its fourth season and is continuing to partner with Netflix for series based Assassin’s Creed and Devil May Cry.

Continuing his trend of working on video game related projects, KRAFTON Inc revealed that Shankar will create and oversee their upcoming animated project. KRAFTON’s CEO CH Kim described the partnership as representing “a step into our broader strategy of expanding the PUBG Universe into a multimedia franchise”. With more than 55 million concurrent daily players and numerous game of the year awards since its release, it’s understandable why KRAFTON would wish to expand PUBG into a greater multimedia franchise. This expansion has has already begun, as evidenced by the recent release of their short film Ground Zero starring Don Lee.

While very little is currently known about the project, Shankar has expressed his excitement in bringing his vision of PUBG to fans, being a fan of the series himself. Despite its straight-forward premise, there is actually a great deal of lore that Shankar will likely be able to draw from. In a statement released by Shankar, he expressed gratitude towards KRAFTON for their “trust and confidence they’ve placed in [him] to execute [his] vision”. He also stated that he believes “this animated project represents another step in the evolution of mending the torched bridge between the games industry and Hollywood”. You can read the full statements of both Kim and Shankar’s below:

Kim: “In addition to the continued development of new and engaging in-game PUBG content, our partnership with Adi Shankar represents a step into our broader strategy of expanding the PUBG Universe into a multimedia franchise. We are excited to work with Shankar on exploring and realizing a world that brings the game to life for our fans. We look forward to sharing more about this animated project in the near future.”

Shankar: “As a player, I’ve been crushing the competition in the Battlegrounds since PUBG released in 2017. I’m grateful to KRAFTON for the trust and confidence they’ve placed in me to execute my vision as a filmmaker and I’m excited to embark on this journey together. To me, this animated project represents another step in the evolution of mending the torched bridge between the games industry and Hollywood. I look forward to revealing to everybody what winning a chicken dinner looks like.”

Considering the critical success of Castlevania, and the faith that Netflix have in him to bring about similar results similar projects, it’s understandable why Krafton would choose to partner with Shankar. Moreover, his faith in his own skills is undoubtedly reassuring for fans. As the producer notes, the video game and film industries have never meshed particularly well, there is a long list of derided film adaptations of video games, with the former never quite knowing how to correctly balance the elements of the latter. It may be a while before any specific information comes about, but here’s hoping that PUBG will be able to continue Shankar’s positive trend of video game adaptations.
