Players of PlayerUnknown’s BATTLEGROUNDS will be able to help the company determine what rules the game’s new ranked competitive mode will have, according a recent developer update. PUBG has been a highly competitive game since it was first released back in 2016, drawing in millions of fans with its addictive gameplay loop consisting of minutes of tension-building silence erupting into quick but deadly shootouts, usually leaving the deceased team with the desire to play just one more time to see if they could improve their performance.

PUBG was an integral part of the first wave of battle royale games, but it has kept up with the popularity of other stellar titles like Respawn Entertainment’s Apex Legends by continuing to refine and adjust its mechanics in order to provide fresh and enjoyable experiences to players. Although not as ingrained in the public eye as battle royale games like Fortnite, PUBG still has a strong player base on PC, console, and mobile devices, the last of which just celebrated its two-year anniversary by adding an amusement park to PUBG Mobile’s Erangel.

Now, PUBG is hoping to get player feedback on their new ranked competitive mode ruleset. According to an update on PUBG’s official website, as of right now this new ranked mode will add better loot spawns to the battle royale game and increase the “tempo” of the Blue Zone in order to “force more confrontations” between players. The Red Zones have been adjusted as well, and are now “much more likely to occur at the edge of the safe zone.” Check out the announcement for PUBG’s new ranked ruleset changes below:

Ranked Ruleset is now live in LABS for a limited time. Bring out your competitive side with the heart-pounding intensity of the Ranked Ruleset. Feedback from this test will help us determine the ruleset for our upcoming Competitive Mode.https://t.co/lwVcTLUDop pic.twitter.com/n2jHe3LrMX

Most disappointingly, the official statement also reports that the Motor Glider, the lightweight planes added to PUBG only recently, will not be available in this new competitive mode, saying that it will be “temporarily disabled until we can put more thought into if it is right for competitive play.” However, the company did say they were looking for feedback on any and all of the rules they have come up with so far, and when mentioning the removal of the Motor Glider the official announcement again reiterates “Your feedback here would be welcomed as well!” The test schedule in PUBG LABS for these rules is currently underway now and will run until 16:00 KST March 9th.

It’s good that the developers of PUBG are asking for player opinions on what the specifications and rules for the game’s upcoming ranked competitive mode should be, especially given the volatile nature of any large online video game community when new rules are implemented without their consent. While the company may not have the strongest track record when it comes to player communication, especially given the recent PUBG Esports information which has come to light, it’s good to see them trying to build an honest dialog with their players. Now, all everyone needs to do is go tell PlayerUnknown’s BATTLEGROUNDS that nothing can call itself a true competitive mode if it doesn’t have a Motor Glider in it.
