Karamo Brown provides an update on Queer Eye season 6, announces Holiday Spectacular, and responds to recent ‘cancel culture’ controversies. In February 2018, five queer individuals won over the entire world as the new Fab Five team spearheading the Netflix reboot of Queer Eye. Since then, Karamo Brown, Antoni Porowski, Bobby Berk, Jonathan Van Ness, and Tan France have become high-profile TV personalities, entrepreneurs, and digital influencers. Five seasons later, Queer Eye is still one of the most popular shows on Netflix.

But Queer Eye largely depends on human connection, traveling to different places, and being in touch with the lives, homes, and families of each “hero.” While it is disappointing, it is not entirely shocking that the series’ sixth season is being postponed until lockdowns and social distancing restrictions are lifted. Those barriers make the Fab Five’s work nearly impossible, as most of the episodes are filmed in public places or inside people’s homes. Still, the fans have been eagerly awaiting for their favorite feel-good TV show to come back with new episodes.

During an exclusive interview, Karamo Brown told Screen Rant that the Fab Five only got to film one episode of Queer Eye season 6 before all the COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions. Nonetheless, he is launching a new live-stream event called “Karamo’s Holiday Spectacular,” which will be held via Instagram Live on Thursday, December 17. This IG Live will feature special guests and hand out $75,000 to people “spreading cheer all year long.” Karamo also offered a lot of timely advice and even got personal when talking about resilience. In particular, Karamo addressed the fans who have attempted to “cancel” him for working with certain organizations or people: “I have a certain strength that I don’t mind walking into situations with people who feel extremely different than me. With people, corporations, and organizations, I’m consistently putting myself in the middle of situations where people do not agree with me. And I do it because I do feel like I have that capacity and I understand that’s one of my purposes here.”

Karamo then looked back on his life experiences prior to Queer Eye fame: “This is just from me being real with you – as a Black gay man, I don’t have the luxury to walk away from people or organizations that don’t like me. It’s not the way that I was raised in my generation. My parents were immigrants, they didn’t have the luxury to say, ‘Oh, you don’t like immigrants? Well, great, I’m going to not still try to work in your space.'” Karamo reflected, “You know, people will cancel me all the time because they’re like, ‘How could you talk to this person!? How could you do this!?’ But what they don’t realize immediately is there’s always a plan behind it and there’s always a reason why I’m doing it, which is for the betterment of my community.” Later, Karamo identified what he sees as the biggest problem with the so-called cancel culture: “When you cancel somebody, all they do is go find a group of people who already believe like them, [so] they still stay the same. They’re not learning anything new. They’re not changing anything.” But Karamo also took the time to share a lot of insights that can help people who are trying to navigate the holidays in 2020.

Specifically, Queer Eye star Karamo Brown offered plenty of advice to those who are social distancing, working from home, and trying to make the best out of this holiday season. On boundaries: “Before you can set a boundary, you have to be clear on why you’re setting this boundary. When people step over boundaries, it is normally because we’re not clear on what this boundary means to us.” To queer youth: “Because I was a queer youth, and because I worked [at the LGBT Center] with queer youth between the ages of 11 and 21, I know what it is like for your family to reject you. And I want people to know that there’s a community out there that’s trying to support you and be there for you.” On virtual meetings: “Plan an activity. Do something that you can do together on Zoom to sort of break up the monotony. (…) Are we cooking together? Are we playing a game together? Do something where you are connecting outside of just sitting there looking at each other.”

It seems like the Queer Eye fans will have to wait a bit longer until season 6 is available on Netflix. For now, they can watch Karamo’s Holiday Spectacular on Instagram Live taking place on Thursday, December 17.
