Queer Eye Season 6s Five Best Moments

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Season 6 of Queer Eye, now streaming on Netflix.

Queer Eye, Netflix’s fabulous makeover series hosted by Jonathan Van Ness, Bobby Berk, Tan France, Antoni Porowski and Karamo Brown just unveiled its sixth season on Netflix. After touring Japan and Philadelphia, the Fab Five is back to prove everything is bigger and better in Austin, Texas.

Season 6 experienced significant production delays thanks to the global COVID-19 pandemic, but fans were thrilled when the season was finally released on Netflix at the end of 2021. As always with the mega-popular franchise, there were plenty of heart-warming moments to go around.

A Simple, Effective Conversation About Pronouns

Queer Eye Season 6s Five Best Moments

Season 6, Episode 3, “No Bull,” centers around rugged rancher Josh Eilers and his desperation for refinement in the hopes of finally settling down with the girl of his dreams. Though a bit scruffy on the outside initially, Josh has quickly become one of the fan-favorite Heroes of the season thanks to his good looks and honest conversations with the Fab Five. One particular moment stands out, when Josh is receiving his hair transformation from beauty expert Jonathan, who identifies as non-binary.

The conversation of pronoun usage has become a polarizing topic; however, the conversation shared between Josh and Jonathan is a perfect example of how this conversation should go. Josh mistakenly addresses Jonathan as a man, and after Jonathan explains that they don’t identify as a man or woman and instead uses he/she/they pronouns, Josh reaches a new understanding of non-binary persons and learns that if one is unsure, it’s always okay to ask rather than assume someone’s pronouns. The conversation is pure and wholesome and it’s clear Josh has a genuine desire to learn and apply his new knowledge in the future.

Navarro High School’s Time Capsule was Packed with Care

Queer Eye Season 6s Five Best Moments

Episode 4, “A Night to Remember,” follows the senior class of Navarro High School and how they navigate finishing their senior year — and throwing a prom — during a global pandemic. Hearing just how much of the senior experience these kids missed out on is disheartening, but seeing the outpouring of love from the students and their teachers in this school is something truly special. Not only was the prom adorable, but the students looked stunning in their tuxes and gowns, and you could tell just how much this special night meant to them.

Towards the end of the episode, the kids gather in the courtyard of the school to fill their own time capsule to be buried and eventually dug up in the future. Some of them included poems, artwork and personal trinkets, but all of the students had an emotional and meaningful story to share. There wasn’t a dry eye among the Fab Five — even Tan cried — in this moment, or the viewers at home.

Angel’s Reconnection with Her Dad

Queer Eye Season 6s Five Best Moments

The second episode of Season 6 follows transgender powerlifter Angel on her journey to self-discovery after her transition. She struggles with the same issues a lot of women do; mostly body image and self-esteem, but also deals with the additional challenge of her family accepting her post-transition — namely her father. This is the crux of the episode; Angel’s dad hasn’t spoken to her since before her transition due to his own mental blocks and insecurities.

However, after they each have discussions with Karamo, they agree to meet in person for the first time in over a year. The look on her dad’s face when he sees her for the first time as she truly is, paired with a sweet fatherly caress of her face is arguably one of the most touching moments of the season. Angel also shows true grace within her forgiveness of her father, making a point about everyone needing to take their own time when it comes to processing life-changing pieces of information such as one’s decision to transition.

“Snow White of Central Texas” Highlights a True Superwoman

Queer Eye Season 6s Five Best Moments

The seventh and possibly most emotional episode of the season, “Snow White of Central Texas” follows the owner and operator of Safe In Austin, a refuge for animals with special needs saved from less than ideal living conditions. The sanctuary is run by Jamie Wallace Grenier, who has dedicated so much of her life to helping others that she’s forgotten how to put herself first. The episode is packed with emotion as the Fab Five help Jamie discover her true strength and realize just how loved and appreciated she is, and how important she is to her community.

The “Yas, Queen” Song

Fans of Queer Eye are no stranger to the phrase “yas, queen!” — usually uttered by Jonathan Van Ness. In Season 6, Episode 8, “Gimme Shelter,” the Fab Five meet Chris Baker, a champion for the homeless trying to build the ultimate sustainable shelter. However, Chris struggles with personal demons of his own; a history of substance abuse and feeling overwhelming guilt about the death of his mother.

Chris’s transformation is a true metamorphosis, and he often throws around the phrase “yes, queen” to alleviate more emotional moments throughout the episode, much to the delight of the Fab Five. In a special post-credit scene, Chris even whips out his acoustic guitar to serenade the Five with his own original song aptly titled, “Yas, Queen.” While not a musical masterpiece, it’s genuine, heartfelt and the perfect end to the episode.

Queer Eye’s sixth season may very well be its strongest yet. With 10 episodes and a variety of individuals whom the Fab Five help to overcome certain issues and obstacles in their lives, Season 6 is chock full of heart-wrenching stories and emotional reveals that will turn even the most stoic of viewers into a puddle of tears. In addition to the Texas-sized fashion served up by the Fab Five, Season 6 bears no shortage of high-emotion, inspiration and feel-good moments, securing Queer Eye as one of the most popular Netflix shows currently streaming.

To see all these fabulous moments and more, Season 6 of Queer Eye is now streaming on Netflix.
