Raised by Wolves How The Tropical Zone Setting Will Change Season 2

Raised by Wolves season 2 is in the outlining stages, and showrunner Aaron Guzikowski has teased how the season’s new location—a tropical zone—will change everything. In addition to more Mithraic mysteries and a complete “rebirth” of Marcus, the new setting may completely change the feel and flavor of the show — here’s how.

Raised by Wolves season 1 portrayed Kepler-22B as a sort of barren wasteland. Mother and Father arrived on the planet with limited resources, especially given that their ship crashed on the planet’s surface and fell down one of the huge holes that turned out to be one of the defining features of the landscape. The place where they set up their camp and begin farming for survival is dusty and cold. The crops on Kepler-22B only grow where the bodies of the snake creatures lie in a spiral pattern, having decayed so that only bones remain. It is a harsh existence for the human children Mother and Father attempt to raise. However, as the season progresses, there is talk of moving to the tropical zone.

Very little is known about the tropical zone, other than what can be assumed — it’s likely a warmer climate with more rain and vegetation. It’s also a place where the colonists, both atheist and Mithraic, are likely to find more animal life. In Raised by Wolves season 1, the only animals seen are the vicious creatures that begin to appear about halfway through. After one of them nearly kills Tempest, Father becomes convinced that it’s his duty to teach the human children how to hunt the creatures as a means to acquire the necessary nutrients for their survival. The crops don’t seem to do very well and the humans subsist mainly on some sort of brown fungus that Campion finds. Hopefully, the tropical zone will provide additional food sources, but Guzikowski admitted in an interview with Collider that it’s going to be very different.

Raised by Wolves season 1 was shot in a particular region of South Africa, but Guzikowski says they’ll be changing locations for season 2. Although it sounds like the show will still be shooting in South Africa, Guzikowski said, “The one thing I can say is that season 2 will take place in a very different region on the planet. So a lot of the lessons that I learned in season 1 won’t even apply.” In other words, it sounds like the tropical zone on Kepler-22B is going to change, at least physically, the feel of the show.

Much like earth, Kepler-22B has many various regions with vastly different traits. Although slightly smaller, Kepler-22B is basically the same size as earth, so there’s no reason to think it’s not covered in climates of all types, from tropical to arctic. Nevertheless, in the Raised by Wolves season 1 finale, in an attempt to destroy the snake creature that Mother gives birth to, Mother and Father fly the lander down one of the giant holes and into the molten core of the planet. Somehow, the lander survives, and they end up flying through and coming out on the other side of Kepler-22B in the tropical zone. Although Campion and the other children remain in the barren region of the planet, it can be assumed that Mother will do everything in her power to retrieve her children and take them to the tropical zone in the hope that they will find better resources for survival there.

If the tropical zone on Kepler-22b is anything like those found on earth, it will be covered in dense vegetation and an area will need to be cleared to create a camp. This new environment will be easy to get lost in, so anyone who wanders off will be hard to find, including those who are lured by the voice or ghosts of the dead, like Campion. There are likely to be predatory animals too, and possibly deadly plants. It’s likely the setting will create a more claustrophobic feel for Raised by Wolves season 2, although it remains to be seen how the newly arrived atheists will adapt to life on the planet and if they will choose to live in the tropical zone as well. Expect Raised by Wolves season 2 to continue to develop its characters, and the setting to be a major part of it.
