RDR2 What Dutchs WORST Plan Was

Red Dead Redemption 2 is full of interesting characters for the player to interact with, but perhaps none are more memorable than Dutch van der Linde. Over the course of the game Dutch repeatedly proclaims that he has a plan, some sort of grand scheme that will result in a change of fortune for the gang, but his plans are what end up destroying the group altogether. While Van der Linde makes plenty of costly decisions during Red Dead Redemption 2, one in particular stands out as his worst.

In the wake of killing Angelo Bronte, Dutch wanted to pull off a major score before fleeing Saint Denis. He decided that the best way to accomplish this was by robbing a major bank in the city itself. Considering the size of Saint Denis, as well as the volume of armed policemen within it, this move was clearly a major risk. The heist, which is played out in the Chapter 4 mission “Banking, The Old American Art,” turned out to be a disaster.

Although Dutch’s plan seemed to go well at first, with the gang infiltrating the bank and Arthur making it to the vault, the heist quickly falls apart. Agent Milton arrives in the city with his Pinkertons and are able to capture Hosea, who is then killed. As the gang is attempting to make their escape on the rooftops of Saint Denis, Lenny is killed as well. Red Dead Redemption’s protagonist, John Marston, is also captured by the law, and is sent to prison for his crimes. The remaining gang members were eventually able to sneak onto a ship, setting the stage for RDR2’s storyline in Guarma.

The Aftermath of Dutch’s Plan in Red Dead Redemption 2

Dutch’s Saint Denis disaster can be directly attributed to the destruction of the gang. It got both Hosea and Lenny killed, both of whom were integral to the gang’s functioning. Hosea was a trusted leader and one of Dutch’s closest friends, and without him there wasn’t anyone left to talk sense into Van der Linde. Lenny represented the future future of the gang, being so young, and was one of the most reliable “guns” they had. His death, along with John’s capture, made the gang much more vulnerable to the law and rival gangs.

There is also the matter of Guarma, an infamous portion of Red Dead Redemption 2’s story, where players watched as Dutch deteriorated even further. It was there Dutch had to come to grips with the reality of Hosea’s death, and it led to him to make a string of rash decisions, such as killing a woman in cold blood. Everything that happened to the gang may have been avoided if Dutch hadn’t pushed his Saint Denis plan, which was difficult for the leader to come to terms with.

Dutch van der Linde had no shortage of get-rich quick schemes for Arthur and the gang to try and execute during Red Dead Redemption 2 and, as civilization closed in on him, those “plans” only became more unreasonable. Had they successfully robbed the bank in Saint Denis, it is possible that the gang could have escaped and begun a new life, but unfortunately that was never a likely outcome considering how unreasonable Dutch had become.
