RDR2 Why Dutch Has The Nicest Tent In Camp

Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2 is as much a story about Arthur Morgan’s misadventures as it is about his outlaw mentor Dutch van der Linde. The Van der Linde gang leader was behind all of the increasingly risky plots that get the crew chased across the frontier. Every time the gang would relocate, its members had to rearrange their tents, but Dutch would always have the largest and most lavish setup compared to the other RDR2 gang members.

Most crew members often share living quarters or sleep on bedrolls in Red Dead Redemption 2, while Dutch has a cot and several decorative rugs on display. Arthur also receives a better-than-average sleeping arrangement, with a raised bed and several knickknacks he uses to decorate his bedside table. Still, Dutch’s tent has far more privacy and should be the envy of every Van der Linde gang member in camp. Why didn’t one of the other members complain about their poor living conditions than their leader?

Rockstar Games never directly explains why the rest of the Van der Linde gang was okay with the clear disparity between Dutch’s quarters and the rest of the crew’s tents. RDR2 did provide some context clues in Dutch’s attitude, how the gang viewed him, and even though the RDR2’s camp upgrade system. Here’s why Dutch was living so stylishly compared to the rest of the Van der Linde gang’s rough conditions.

Red Dead Redemption 2: Why Does Dutch Have The Nicest Tent?

The most obvious reason Dutch’s tent is so much nicer than everyone else’s in Red Dead Redemption 2 is that Dutch is the gang’s leader, and needs to set himself apart from the rest of the crew as a visual display of his rank. He’s also a very flashy dresser and loves to commandeer the group’s attention, whether it’s over the campfire after a long day or when he’s hatching another get-rich-quick scheme.

As Red Dead Redemption 2’s story progresses, it becomes painfully clear that Dutch actually has no master plan of how to guide the gang to a life of riches and was flying by the seat of his pants for the entirety of the game’s plot. He’s a con man at heart, and having a put-together tent made others believe he had everything figured out.

It worked wonders for Dutch and made the Van der Linde gang members fall in line behind him, especially Arthur. Players even had to pay money to upgrade Dutch’s tent first in order to gain access to the upgrade option which improve Arthur’s living quarters, implying that Dutch’s comfort comes above all else. Once that upgrade is purchased, gang members will even contribute the money and resources they collect to help the camp.

While Dutch did create a self-sustaining community, he tricked all of the Van der Linde gang into believing he was a stable and wise leader by looking the part. Red Dead Redemption 2, however, eventually reveals his elaborate tent and expensive clothes were all just smoke and mirrors.
