A few diehard Resident Evil 4 fans have given the popular title a full 4K makeover, after years of dedicated toil to overhaul the game’s now-dated graphics. In a series of videos on YouTube, the cabal showed off their extensive handiwork.

Resident Evil 4, a main-series entry in the longstanding horror franchise, was released in 2005, originally as a Nintendo GameCube exclusive. It was soon ported to various consoles and found almost immediate critical success upon its release. RE4 was praised for its compelling story, characters, and gameplay, and certain elements and innovations pioneered by the game, particularly the “over-the-shoulder” third-person perspective and the game’s inventory system, have been mimicked in survival horror games that have been released in its wake.

Of all the games in the series, RE4 is still considered to be one of the best, and its fans continue to pay tribute nearly 16 years after its release. And although a remaster of the game is now officially in the works, that didn’t stop a group of fans from giving the original game their very own graphic overhaul. YouTuber albert marin posted videos of the finished product on their channel, which demonstrated the work they had undergone in remastering the character models, improving environment textures and lighting, blood and fire effects, and much, much more. Check out one of their videos below, to get a real idea of how much work went into the project:

The remaster doesn’t necessarily bring the graphics into current-gen console territory, but considering the amount of work and detail that went into it, it’s definitely a significant and impressive effort. There have been some truly spectacular graphic overhauls in recent months, even for games like Battlefield I, which is way more recent than Resident Evil 4. While there’s a limit to how far even the most diligent developers can go with more dated graphics, it’s still pretty awesome to see what non-professionals can do with current technology, which can breathe new life into old favorites and make them more approachable to those who came later in Resident Evil’s lifespan.

The promised remaster of Resident Evil 4 is more likely than not going to ruffle some feathers, as Capcom is allegedly overhauling it so that it won’t play like the original – a bit of a faux pas, considering that the game is vastly considered to be near perfect. So for any fan with whom this doesn’t sit particularly well, this remaster looks like the perfect solution to anyone who wants to revisit Leon’s exploits as originally intended, but with a bit more polish.
