Resident Evil How The Reboot Is Already Better Than The Original Movies

A new reboot of the Resident Evil series is slated to be released in 2021 with Johannes Roberts on board as the writer and director. While fans may be reluctant for another cinematic adaptation of the beloved video game series, this new release is already on track to be a better experience than the series created by Paul W. S. Anderson.

While the Anderson Resident Evil series has its fans, it’s undisputedly a totally different creature than the video games the films were supposed to be based on, and introduced Alice—who wasn’t in the video games—a completely new storyline, and new characters. Those movies lay firmly in the action genre, focusing mainly on over-the-top fight sequences with very little character development or plot.

The reboot, however, is already doing things better than Anderson’s series, namely in that it intends to bring the franchise squarely into the horror genre—where many fans would argue it belongs—and more closely follow the game series. Roberts claims that the movie will be much scarier and darker than its predecessor, which was more of an action/horror franchise, and will serve as an origin story based on elements from the first and second games.

Following in the footsteps of the first four Resident Evil games, as well as the seventh and upcoming eighth installments, this new reboot will return to its RE roots and bring back the horror. Constantin Film and Johannes Roberts have confirmed that the new movie will be an origin story set in 1998 Raccoon City, and will feature elements of both Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2. The Resident Evil reboot already has a good leader at the helm with Roberts’ background being in atmospheric horror movies like 47 Meters Down and The Strangers: Prey at Night. On the project, which started filming on October 17, 2020 in Ontario, Roberts has said his idea spurred from his experience playing through the two original games, a “terrifying, visceral experience” that many fans will relate to the series. Producer Robert Kulzer revealed a bit of the setting for this upcoming movie in an interview with Consequence of Sound, saying:

“After a dozen games, six live action movies and hundreds of pages of fan fiction, we felt compelled to return to the year 1998, to explore the secrets hidden in the walls of the Spencer Mansion and Raccoon City.”

So far, much of the main cast has already been revealed, giving fans more hope for a faithful movie adaptation from this reboot. This casting news coincided with the confirmation that many familiar game characters will appear in the reboot, such as Jill Valentine, Claire and Chris Redfield, Albert Wesker, Leon Scott Kennedy, and William Birkin. The two leads will be Jill Valentine and Claire Redfield, played by Kaya Scodelario (Maze Runner) and Hannah-John Kamen (Ant-Man and The Wasp), respectively. It will be interesting to see how the story brings both characters’ stories into one cohesive plot for the film, but fans are optimistic based on the clear intention to bring this reboot back to its horror roots.

While Paul W. S. Anderson and Milla Jovovich are both well-known Resident Evil fans, the choice to create movies set in the same world as the games, but with such a departure from the game’s story, was disappointing to say the least. Anderson’s Resident Evil movies have their fans, but they’re a totally different feel and story from the games. The new reboot appears to be the complete opposite, which is quite exciting for those who wanted something more true to the source material from the start. Set pictures from the reboot have also been released showing locations from the movie including what appears to be the Raccoon City Police Department and another shot of zombies storming the same RPD door. Both photos looks like they could be straight out of the game, which is another good sign. All in all, everything about this reboot seems incredibly promising. Hopefully soon, fans will get the Resident Evil horror movie they’ve long awaited.
