Resident Evil Village Why The Duke Is RE8s Best New Character

Along with series regular Chris Redfield and returning characters Ethan and Mia Winters, Capcom introduced a multitude of new faces in Resident Evil Village. These varied from the grotesque and fish-like Salvatore Moreau to the tall and enchanting Lady Dimitrescu. But while these characters are certainly interesting with their terrifying presence and imposing designs, they do not hold a candle to The Duke.

[Warning: Spoilers for Resident Evil Village are below.]

Ethan Winters really gets put through the wringer during Resident Evil Village. He spends the entirety of the game, save for a brief moment at the very start, being chased down and savaged by beasts of all manners. Even at home, he still has to endure his wife Mia slapping his hand away with what’s presumably a scalding ladle. And while, yes, Ethan can endure a lot of mishaps, his mental psyche must surely be in tatters. Even just playing the game can leave one feeling fatigued from the constant bombardment of Lycan attacks and eerie doll puppets, let alone actually living it.

Thankfully for Ethan (and players) Resident Evil Village also provides The Duke, who is arguably the best thing to come out of the game. While many fans may like Lady Dimitrescu and her provocative daughters, there is no denying the relief that is found when heroically fleeing into the safe quarters of The Duke’s shop. His friendly and boyish face immediately bring a sense of calm.

Resident Evil Village: Why Everyone Needs Someone Like The Duke

This relief when finding The Duke within Resident Evil Village however, is not just limited to the fact that players are essentially untouchable when interacting with the larger-than-life character. The Duke’s whole being is, quite simply, joyful. He has a wicked sense of humor, making comments on the fallen lords after their deaths such as admiring Lady Dimitrescu’s crystal’s waistline with a very tasty “yes” and mockingly stating that Moreau has “the beauty of the grotesque.” When players have defeated Donna Beneviento, he even greets Ethan with a small doll, and asks him if it is familiar. For some, it may be too soon for such japes, but The Duke pulls it off perfectly and defuses any remaining tension players may have after the House Beneviento ordeal.

The smiling visage of Resident Evil Village’s merchant never falters, even when receiving some less-than-welcome assaults from Ethan (because everyone has tried to throw a pipe bomb at The Duke at least once). Rather than being irritated with these needless attacks, The Duke reacts with chuckles and applause. He only breaks his delighted animations to theatrically cough amid the smoky plumes or to remind Ethan not to waste his precious ammo, which is a very fair point to make when Mother Miranda is undoubtedly not too far away at any given time.

The Duke is also the only character that seems to be totally relaxed at all times throughout Village. While the rest of the game’s world is in some sort of turmoil, The Duke can be found enjoying the simple pleasures of a cigar and a good book. There are even times where he can be found just taking a nap while chaos ensues around him. This calm demeanor is infectious, and really allows the player to take a deep breath (or several) before heading out once more into the fray.

In games, as in life, sometimes it is just nice to see a friendly face. In Resident Evil Village, The Duke provides just that. He is one character that will never let Ethan down as he ventures onwards to save Rose from the clutches of despair. This extends beyond just selling Ethan ammo and meals to enhance his stats. It is, after all, The Duke that scoops Ethan up from the rain-sodden grounds after his heart is ripped from his body by Mother Miranda and takes him to the game’s final showdown. In Resident Evil Village’s world of malice and anger, everyone could do with more people like The Duke watching their backs.
