Captain America is a vital member of the MCU. One of two key figures in the Infinity Saga, Steve Rogers’ journey from dutiful soldier to Earth’s mightiest hero is one for the ages. His story arc apparently ended with Avengers: Endgame, but fans shouldn’t be surprised if he eventually makes a return.

Interestingly, a Captain America film was in development as early as the mid-nineties. If the trilogy had indeed taken place in that decade, the recurring themes of commitment and trauma might be less prominent. The visual effects would be less impressive, but the cast could have been incredible. And given the massive popularity of the character, chances are it would’ve made a huge splash.

10 Kevin Costner As Captain America

Captain America: The First Avenger premiered in July of 2011, so the 90s version would’ve premiered in July of 1991. At the time, there was no bigger star in Hollywood than Kevin Costner. Movies like The Untouchables, Bull Durham, and Field of Dreams cemented his place as a leading man, but it was 1990’s Dances with Wolves that truly took him to the apex of fame.

Quintessential all-American Costner would’ve been the studio’s first and probably the only choice for the role. A respected actor and guaranteed box-office draw, Costner’s presence would’ve given the film some necessary star power and would’ve contributed to the actor’s massive success during the early part of the decade.

9 Demi Moore As Black Widow

Even if The Avengers hadn’t happened in the nineties version of the MCU, Black Widow still plays a key role in Winter Soldier, which would’ve premiered in 1994. At the time, Demi Moore was at the highest peak of her career. One of the few members of the so-called Brat Pack to successfully transition into adult roles, Moore’s leading turns in films like Ghost and A Few Good Men made her the most demanded female star in Hollywood.

The role of Black Widow would’ve played directly into Moore’s strengths as an actress. The nineties version of the Widow would’ve probably given more importance to the character’s femme fatale qualities. Still, the role would’ve been yet another triumph for Moore’s career.

8 Morgan Freeman As Nick Fury

After the success of Driving Miss Daisy, Morgan Freeman became a Hollywood A-lister. He cemented his place thanks to blockbusters like Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, also starring Costner, and critically-acclaimed darlings like Unforgiven. The role of Nick Fury would’ve given him the chance to play a tough, commanding role, which would’ve contrasted nicely with his other 1994 release, the now-classic The Shawshank Redemption.

Freeman’s prestige as an acclaimed actor would’ve provided Winter Soldier with a more dignified tone. The film would’ve also benefited from his chemistry with Costner, making him the perfect choice for the role.

7 Brad Pitt As Bucky Barnes

Bucky Barnes is introduced during The First Avenger, where he plays a supporting but pivotal role. In 1991, Brad Pitt gained recognition thanks to a similar kind of role in Thelma & Louise. He would’ve accepted the role of Bucky to further advance his career, and by the time Winter Soldier premiered, his profile would be even higher thanks to films like Interview with the Vampire and Legends of the Fall.

Bucky plays his more prominent role in Civil War, which would’ve premiered in 1996, fitting nicely with Pitt’s career. He received his first Oscar nomination that year thanks to his performance in Twelve Monkeys and after the success of Se7en the year before, he would’ve been an even bigger star than Costner.

6 Andie MacDowell As Peggy Carter

Following her critically acclaimed turn in 1989’s Sex, Lies, and Videotape, Andie MacDowell began a short-lived albeit highly successful film career. Peggy’s most prominent role happens in The First Avenger, which would’ve premiered in 1991, just as her Hollywood career began to truly take off.

The role would’ve helped elevate her profile, paving the way for her future roles in classics like Groundhog Day and Four Weddings and a Funeral. Peggy is a constant during the entire Captain America trilogy, and MacDowell would’ve probably come back for Peggy’s short but meaningful appearance in Winter Solider.

5 Alan Rickman As Johann Schmidt/Red Skull

After his breakthrough performance as the cunning criminal mastermind Hans Gruber in the 1988 mega-hit Die Hard, Alan Rickman became the actor to play European villains. 1991 would see him playing two of them: the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and Johann Schmidt in the would-be version of The First Avenger.

Rickman’s distinctive voice and acting panache would’ve been a fantastic fit for the Red Skull. And although the character appears in only one movie, Rickman would’ve left his mark on the entire series, setting the bar extremely high for villains to come.

4 Will Smith As Falcon

Sam Wilson first appears during the events of The Winter Soldier, which would’ve come out in 1994. At the time, Will Smith was mainly known for his role in the popular sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The year before, he received considerable praise thanks to his role in Six Degrees of Separation, a film that contributed to the rise of his film career.

The role of Falcon would’ve marked a major landmark for Smith. It would’ve helped him establish his action-man persona a year before Bad Boys came out. By the time Civil War came along, Smith would be on his way to becoming one of the biggest stars in the world thanks to his other 1996 release, Independence Day.

3 Cameron Diaz As Sharon Carter

Cameron Diaz’s jumped to fame thanks to her turn as bombshell Tina Carlyle in 1994’s The Mask. That same year, she would’ve played the role of Sharon Carter in The Winter Soldier. The part is rather small, although she does gain some more prominence in the third film, Civil War.

The role of Sharon would’ve helped Diaz consolidate her career in Hollywood at a time when she was starting to build up her resume. Two years after the trilogy officially ended, she would be cast in the role that would turn her into an A-lister: Mary Jensen in the Farrelly brothers’ hit comedy There’s Something About Mary.

2 John Malkovich As Helmut Zemo

RetroCast If The Captain America Movies Were Made In The 1990s

Like Rickman, John Malkovich built quite the reputation for playing foreign villains. By 1996, Malkovich was already a two-time Oscar nominee for his film debut in 1984’s Places in the Heart, and for his supporting performance in 1993’s In the Line of Fire.

Malkovich’s Zemo would’ve been just as sinister if perhaps a tad louder than Daniel Brühl’s. However, he would’ve done just as much with the role of the Spanish-German Brühl. Zemo is one of the MCU’s most cunning villains, and the fact that he actually wins at the end makes him even better.

1 Robert Redford As Alexander Pierce

Already a living legend in 1994 thanks to his roles in classics like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, and Out of Africa, Robert Redford would’ve been able to play the role of Alexander Pierce, even in the 1994 version of The Winter Soldier.

Known for his intense acting versatility, 1994’s Redford would’ve given Pierce the same level of depth and dominance as 2014’s Redford. The role may be somewhat generic, but an actor of Redford’s capabilities can completely elevate the material, turning Pierce into an instantly memorable villain.
