Rey Is Already Set Up To Repeat Lukes Jedi Order Mistakes

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker saw Rey continuing the legacy of the Jedi and the Skywalker family, and while she learned from many of her mistakes in the sequel trilogy, she is already set up to repeat the Jedi Order mistakes of her mentor, Luke Skywalker. The Star Wars universe has become one of the most extensive, popular, and profitable universes in the world of sci-fi, and while it has branched out to other media through the years, it’s still best known for its movies, specifically the Skywalker saga.

The history of the Star Wars universe is divided into three, with the original trilogy introducing the saga’s main characters, concepts, and events, the prequel trilogy exploring the backstory of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, and the sequel movies bringing the Skywalker saga to an end. Disney’s sequel movies also introduced a new generation of characters, both heroes (Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron) and villains (Kylo Ren, Snoke, and General Hux), with the purpose of having them as the new leads. However, the one that was established as the new main hero was Rey (Daisy Ridley), but she was also set up to repeat the mistakes of Luke Skywalker.

Rey was introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens as a “nobody”, which was confirmed in the next movie, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, much to the complaints of fans who were hoping for her to be Luke’s daughter or even Obi-Wan Kenobi’s granddaughter. However, this was retconned in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker when she was revealed to be Sheev Palpatine’s granddaughter, and he had big plans for her as he wanted to transfer his spirit into her body to continue living. Rey eventually defeated him and chose her own destiny, adopting the last name of “Skywalker” like her mentor (as she was trained by Luke in The Last Jedi) and continuing the legacy of the Jedi – and she will also make the same mistakes as Luke.

In The Last Jedi, during her time in Ahch-To with Luke, Rey was drawn to the Sacred Jedi texts, which according to Luke, were all that remained of the Jedi Order. Luke later tried to burn down the ancient tree along with the texts and counted on the help of Yoda’s Force spirit, but unbeknownst to him, Rey had taken the texts with her. Rey’s training with Luke was brief (and not smooth at all), and with him gone as well as Leia, all she has is the Sacred Texts that put her on the same path as her mentor. In addition to that, she, like Luke, has Force Ghosts around her (those of Luke and Leia) that just won’t tell her everything she needs, thus repeating the same mistakes as Luke. Extended (canon) media has revealed that after renaming herself “Rey Skywalker” with the blessing of the Force Ghosts of Luke and Leia, she continued her path and became a Jedi Master, and looked at the possibility of training her own generation of Jedi, thus carrying on with the Skywalker legacy but also repeating Luke’s story.

The Star Wars universe keeps expanding, and while there are no more movies planned for the Skywalker saga, it’s to be seen if Rey’s post-Rise of Skywalker life will be addressed in other media and thus show what she has done since that visit to Tatooine at the end of the ninth Star Wars movie and if she learned from Luke’s mistakes or is repeating them, like many other things in the sequel trilogy.
