RHOSLC Inside Jen Shahs Fallout With Fashion Designer Koa Johnson

Koa Johnson is opening up about the toxic work environment he endured while working for The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star Jen Shah. Amid the release of Hulu’s newest Housewives-based documentary The Housewife and the Shah Shocker, Jen is under fire over all that has been revealed. Koa once worked closely with Jen and was on the receiving end of the vicious tirades she would launch against her Shah Squad employees. Earlier this year, leaked audio revealed the scathing verbal lashing Jen spewed out at Koa over her reunion show dress. Now, Koa is coming forward and explaining why he escaped to Hawaii to get away from Jen’s destructive behavior.

Ahead of Jen’s shocking arrest, she was already in the hot seat for leaked audio that revealed how badly she mistreated her staff behind the scenes. In recordings shared online back in March, Jen could be heard shouting profanities at her Shah Squad over things that appeared to be beyond their control. Koa was among the victims with Jen heard belittling the designer by barking orders at him and asking “how many f***ing hands do you need?” Shortly after the audio leaked, Koa blasted Jen and accused her of being abusive and not paying him for his services.

In the newly-released Hulu documentary The Housewife and the Shah Shocker, Koa opens up even more about how traumatic his work experience with Jen was. When referencing the leaked audio incident, Koa revealed that Jen “threw a chili bowl” at him after she became “upset” over her dress for the season 1 reunion. “Every scene, she’s screaming. And in real life, there are moments when she’s always screaming,” Koa explained noting that the Bravo star is “actually worse off-screen.” Koa quit working for Jen after the reunion fiasco and moved to Hawaii to find peace. However, he’s still calling out Jen for her mistreatment and for not paying him for his services. “The last paid compensation I got from her was in September 2020. But I worked for her all the way up to January,” Koa said. “As far as my other co-workers, they made it known to me that they were not being compensated as well.”

Koa notes his Polynesian culture and how strong conversations that include shouting are embraced as long as you’re coming from a loving place of offering enlightenment. With that said, Koa says that wasn’t the case while working for Jen. “When I got yelled at [by] Jen, there was nothing for me to really learn,” he said. “It was not going to get better at a certain point, no matter what I did.” He credited Jen’s frequent outbursts for being the deciding factor in walking away. “I think that crossed a line and a boundary for me,” Koa admitted. “I just decided to get a one-way ticket to Hawaii and I left.” But when he quit, he had no idea what was coming Jen’s way.

Jen was later arrested for her alleged involvement in a nationwide telemarketing scheme. She is facing upwards of 30 years in prison if found guilty. It’s the focus of the new documentary on Jen’s legal case and her toxic behavior on and off the show. With only two seasons of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, Jen Shah has already earned the title of the most controversial cast member. Now that he’s free from Jen’s control, Koa is sharing his truth and dragging Jen’s name in the process. She didn’t stop herself from allegedly throwing a chili bowl at him. So Koa isn’t holding back when revealing the great lengths Jen went to portray a fabricated lavish lifestyle on the show.
