Mary Cosby from The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City recently issued a public apology after being called a racist due to her highly offensive comment about Mexicans, but fans are questioning her sincerity. In a recent episode of RHOSLC, Mary and Lisa Barlow were discussing accusations against Mary, who allegedly took money from her congregation. When compared to fellow castmate Jen Shah, who is being charged for telemarking fraud, Mary said on the show, “It’s not fair to put me with someone so…like, when I think about Jen, I see heartless, I see a thug. Like, you know, those Mexican people that make all those drugs.”

Viewers were shocked at Mary’s racially offensive comment about Mexicans, and she received a lot of backlash from fans. This wasn’t the first time Mary has made an insensitive remark about race. In The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City season 1, she stated that when she sees a group of Black men hanging outside of 7-11, she doesn’t go in. Later on, during the season reunion, she backtracked by saying that she has a fear of men standing outside of convenience stores, but Andy Cohen did not buy it.

After the episode with the Mexican comment aired, Mary posted her apology on Instagram, “I would like to take this opportunity to address a comment I made on the last episode of RHOSLC. I used poor judgment in my choice of words. Please accept my apologies. I was not trying to single out the Mexican Culture. I am African American and I know racism first hand. I’ve lived it daily my entire life.” Fans on Reddit questioned the sincerity of her apology due to its strange, poem-like structure and variety of fonts. Themiddlechildedit said, “This looks like some sign from Hobby Lobby or something.” Mississipilady wrote, “By Andy Cohen still having her on the show he’s enabling her racist and fat shaming comments, which are not okay in today’s society.”

Fans would have accepted Mary’s apology more readily if she had issued something more solemn and succinct. Instead, her flowery presentation took away from the gravity of the situation. Reddit user Nigglesscrips said, “The thing with the font for me is that I find it condescending/patronizing.” Fans wonder if Mary’s apology is meant to just appease people so that she wouldn’t get flack for it. Instead of doing damage control, it seemed to make viewers even more incensed. Another Reddit user ManipulatemewithCake simply said, “Apology NOT accepted.”

Lisa also received criticism for remaining silent, as The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City fans thought that she should have corrected Mary on the spot. When a fan called her out about that on Twitter, Lisa threw Mary under the bus. Lisa replied with, “She should be ashamed. I didn’t say it and am not aligned with this. I address it. Keep watching.” On Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live. Lisa said that she does confront Mary about it in the next upcoming episodes, so viewers will just have to wait and see how this all plays out.
