Audiences are one step closer to reuniting with Daniel Craig’s detective Benoit Blanc. Director Rian Johnson announced that production on Knives Out 2 has officially started, though details on the plot remain a mystery, appropriately.

Released in 2019, the first Knives Out film centered on detective Blanc’s attempt to unearth the truth behind the mysterious death of Harlan Thrombey, a mystery novelist and the patriarch of a wealthy family. While Thrombey’s death is initially believed to be a suicide, Blanc is summoned by an unknown party to investigate further and he soon realizes that each member of the dysfunctional family had their own reason to be angry at the late author.

With the mystery of Thronbey’s death solved by the end of the film, little is known about the storyline for Knives Out 2 aside from the fact that it will focus on a new crime. As such, the sequel will feature a host of brand new characters played by an ensemble cast that includes Dave Bautista, Edward Norton, Janelle MonĂ¡e, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Kate Hudson, Madelyn Cline, and Jessica Henwick. Of course, details on the characters these talented performers will portray have not been divulged. One piece of information fans are aware of, on the other hand, is that Knives Out 2 will be shot in Greece. Johnson announced production on the sequel has begun in the country by sharing a photo on his official Twitter account, which offered little more than a glimpse at one of the cameras being used and a village by the sea in the background.

In the Twitter post, Johnson thanked the people of Greece for allowing them to “do all this murdering” on their otherwise peaceful shores. Considering Knives Out 2 is being shot in unmistakable Greece, it is reasonable to assume the location will serve as the primary setting of the sequel. If nothing else, setting Knives Out 2 in Greece during the summer will help set it apart from its predecessor, which took place in Massachusetts during the fall. Despite announcing the start of production, a release date for the long-awaited sequel was not provided.

Knives Out 2 isn’t the only entry in the franchise coming down the line, as Netflix had purchased the rights to two Knives Out sequels in a deal that reportedly allows Johnson to retain a significant level of creative control on the films. News of the deal was a surprise to most considering Lionsgate, who distributed the first film, had already announced a second Knives Out installment had been approved before Johnson and producer Ram Bergman opted to shop the sequel rights to other distributors.

Of course, audiences are likely thrilled to be getting a sequel regardless of which company is distributing, especially with Johnson back at the helm as both director and writer. While the first film set a high bar for murder-mystery enthusiasts, the talented cast of Knives Out 2 certainly indicates that the sequel is capable of living up to expectations.

Knives Out 2 will be released on Netflix.
