Rian Johnsons Knives Out Casts Sorry to Bother Yous Lakeith Stanfield

Sorry to Bother You and Atlanta star Lakeith Stanfield will join Daniel Craig and Chris Evans in the heavy-hitting cast of director Rian Johnson’s Knives Out. Johnson himself wrote Knives Out, which is described as a modern day mystery story. Craig was the first actor reported to be joining the cast, and he was later joined by Evans.

For both Evans and Craig, jumping aboard Johnson’s new film represents a break from franchise filmmaking. Evans of course has been locked in for years as Captain America in the MCU, but now the actor is ready to leave Steve Rogers behind, with Avengers 4 most likely representing his final appearance as the character. Craig too has become largely associated with a single character, playing James Bond four times, with a fifth and final go-around as the iconic secret agent looming on the horizon.

Indeed, Johnson himself is trying to get out from under the shadow of a major franchise, with Knives Out representing his first writing and directing gig after his controversial turn helming Star Wars: The Last Jedi. It’s apparent that many talented actors are eager to join Johnson as he leaves behind big-budget sci-fi for the world of non-franchise filmmaking. With Evans and Craig already signed up, the film has now added hot actor Lakeith Stanfield to the cast in an as-yet unspecified role, as reported by Deadline. The film is expected to go before cameras later this year.

Though Stanfield has yet to land a signature franchise role like his new co-stars Craig and Evans, he’s definitely made a name for himself as an actor of unique gifts over the past few years. Stanfield’s first brush with the world of blockbusters came in 2017 when he starred as the doomed Andrew Logan King in Jordan Peele’s horror movie Get Out (of course when the film was made no one knew it would be such a huge hit). Stanfield has also made his mark in the world of television thanks to his role as the ever-stoned Darius on FX’s acclaimed Atlanta. In 2018, Stanfield starred opposite Tessa Thompson in Boots Riley’s buzzworthy sci-fi/comedy Sorry to Bother You. He’s also set to appear in the upcoming thriller sequel The Girl In the Spider’s Web.

It’s been a meteoric rise for Stanfield, who was an almost complete unknown before his performance in Get Out put him on the map. Now he will star for Johnson, another Hollywood figure whose name is on the rise after one break-out assignment. Of course, Stanfield hasn’t had to deal with anything like the controversy Johnson has faced ever since his Last Jedi drove a wedge between Star Wars fans that apparently will never be removed. It will be interesting to see what kind of left turn Johnson makes with Knives Out after subverting expectations with his Star Wars entry.
