The nature of the show means that the showrunners can pretty much get away with parodying anything. That means there are tonnes of great easter eggs, straight-up rip-offs, and characters and stories inspired by some of these classic brands. Season 2 in particular really took off the chains, unleashing with a creative freedom that could only be seen in Rick and Morty.

10 A Wrinkle In Time

A Wrinkle In Time may be an unpopular Disney adaptation of a much-beloved novel, but it’s also the film and book that the Rick and Morty creators had in mind when naming the season 2 episode A Rickle In Time.

Asides from the very obvious name choice, there’s a number of similarities between the book and the series. The novel is well known for its quirky visuals, with this episode taking advantage of this by utilizing some of the same reality-bending antics.

9 Flight Of The Conchords

The creators of the show clearly had David Bowie in mind when coming up with the Goodbye Moonmen musical sequence that Fart sings to Morty. The visuals alone were very reminiscent of some of Bowie’s more out there work.

Asides from the psychedelics though, a voice actor was cast that could embody the spirit of Bowie. In a clear reference to his impression on Flight of the Conchords, Jemaine Clement was cast. Coincidentally, he would also replace Bowie in Moana as Tamatoa, after he sadly passed.

8 Invasion Of The Body Snatchers

A sci-fi classic that will forever be influencing the genre, The Invasion of the Body Snatchers was especially relevant when it came to the Auto Erotic Assimilation episode that saw Rick reunite with his ex-girlfriend Unity.

Unity was a hive mind of sorts and had completely infected every person on the planet that she had decided to settle down on. It’s a scary thought, but Rick seems pretty happy with the situation and the citizens also seem a lot more peaceful being controlled.

7 Community

Dan Harmon is well known for being one of the creators of Rick and Morty but before that, he also rose to fame after putting together the quirky and infinitely popular sit-com, Community. There’s been a few references to his previous job throughout the 4 seasons.

But, it could not have been more obvious that he was poking fun at the former show when the characters from the famous study room actually appeared on a TV show; with Rick controlling them all much like Harmon did as the showrunner.

6 Too Many Cooks

Too Many Cooks was the hilarious parody sit-com that was put together by Adult Swim that was created to mock the family-friendly genre. The short film continued to introduce more and more characters in a seemingly never-ending title sequence that had an odd final twist.

Total Rickall which in itself is a reference to Total Recall was an episode that saw ‘too many cooks’ as more and more fake characters were introduced into Rick and Morty’s lives, before the final twist saw the real Mr. Poopybutthole accidentally shot!

5 America’s Got Talent

The talent show format is pretty well known by audiences now. Whether it’s America’s Got Talent, Pop Idol, or the X-Factor, the basic premise is a host of judges will put contestants through their paces as they seek to become the best performer.

For Rick and Morty the stakes were huge as their whole planet was on the line when mysterious heads from the galaxy came down and asked Earth to show them what it got. It turns out that what Earth had was something pretty schwifty.

4 Inspector Gadget

Inspector Gadget is well known for just that, the array of crazy gadgets that one man can have on them at all times. Often they are wacky and over the top, but the multiple movies and animated TV shows demonstrated that anything was possible.

The trademark line of ‘go gadget go’ was the inspiration from the moment that Rick decided to get his rocket-powered ski shoes out, urging them to whisk himself and his grandson away from danger. It’s a clear reference to the popular gadget detective!

3 Alien

One of the scariest aliens in popular culture is the Xenomorph so it was pretty insulting when during a couples therapy session Jerry imagined his wife Beth as one of the creatures from Alien.

This became a larger part of the plot as the creature seemed to come to life. It showed a lot about the dynamic of the couple while also being a great avenue to try to include one of the best sci-fi franchises of all time in the show: one they would later visit again in season 4.

2 The Purge

The Purge has become a pretty infamous slasher and thriller franchise where all laws are void for a short period of time. It’s a dangerous time to be out and about and unluckily Morty and Rick managed to find a planet that was going through a purge.

Look Who’s Purging Now is a direct reference to the franchise, with the episode actually playing up on a lot of the tropes of the Purge series. From the over the top deaths to the surprise betrayals and the deeper societal reason for the purging in the first place.

1 Indiana Jones

An incredibly strange moment in the Indiana Jones series which doesn’t seem to make any sense is when Indie and his companions are sat down to feast on a number of local delicacies. One item that appears on the menu is monkey brains.

During Birdperson’s wedding, one of the treats on that menu was also monkey brains, served much like in the film from the head of a monkey. It was a strange moment but one that fit into the show far better than the adventure series.
