Rick & Morty Dan Harmons Mr Poopybutthole Origin Theory Explained

The origins of Mr. Poopybutthole, a character introduced within season 2 of Rick and Morty, remains one of the shows’s biggest mysteries; however, creator Dan Harmon has his own trippy theory to explain the character’s sudden appearance. Mr. Poopybutthole was one of several wacky characters introduced in the episode “Total Rickall.” While there are many wild fan theories regarding Mr. Poopybutthole, Dan Harmon, the series co-creator, has his own explanation for how the character came to know the Smith family.

During the season 2 episode “Total Rickall,” the Smith household is overrun with an infestation of telepathic alien parasites that embed themselves into memories in order to take over planets. The parasites reproduce throug creating fake memories that feature wacky characters, which then manifest in real life. Morty realizes that the parasites can only create pleasant memories, and the family exterminates all the additional family members whom they can only remember fondly. When Beth (Sarah Chalke) shoots Mr. Poopybutthole, however, he doesn’t change back into his original parasitic form, revealing that he was in fact a real person and the close family friend he claimed to be.

According to Harmon’s theory, however, Mr. Poopybutthole may actually be a memory parasite after all, just a different kind. In an interview with Cinemablend, Harmon presents his own theory that Mr. Poopybutthole could be a similar, more advanced memory parasite that coexists with the others: “just as where there’s flies, there’s spiders — wherever these parasites start blooming, Mr. Poopybutthole is a different species who is more benign, or more advanced […] Maybe Mr. Poopybutthole takes advantage of the holes put in your memory and kind of burrows into those pre-existing holes.” If Mr. Poopybutthole were an evolved parasite that congregates around this other species of parasites, it would explain a few mysteries about Mr. Poopybutthole, such as why the character has never been mentioned before this episode despite being described as a close family friend, why the Smith family’s memories of him are so different from the memories created by the inferior parasites, and — most importantly — why he has the power to break the fourth wall.

Harmon’s theory that the character could be an advanced parasite is supported by the fact that Mr. Poopybutthole has more developed powers when it comes to adjusting memories. The memory that Mr. Poopybutthole reminisces over with the Smith family, in which they get trapped in an elevator after attending the Hulk musical, is the only parasite memory that is an unpleasant experience, which suggests that Mr. Poopybutthole, unlike the other parasites, can implant bad memories as well as good ones. Since Mr. Poopybutthole is featured in other adventures during the Rick and Morty opening credits of “Total Rickall,” it also suggests that Mr. Poopybutthole can insert himself into preexisting memories, while the inferior parasites could only create new ones.

Harmon’s theory further posits that Mr. Poopybutthole is from a different plane of existence, which is why he’s able to address the audience directly:

“he’s more of a fourth dimensional phantom species that isn’t bound by space, and only appears in concentrations of temporal malfunction or misperception and breakdown. Mr. Poopybutthole is insinuating himself into the universe regardless of timeline. And the same powers that allow him to do that allow him to directly talk with the audience.”

Following Harmon’s theory, Mr. Poopybutthole would essentially be a parasite in the mind of the audience as well as in the mind of the Smith family. Since Rick and Morty is a series that explores the multiverse, where infinite versions of Rick and Morty exist in infinite timelines, it’s sometimes hard for the audience to keep track of the timeline for Rick and Morty C-137. Since the series itself experiences similar “concentrations of temporal malfunction or misperception” in the mind of the viewer, the audience becomes viable hosts for Mr. Poopybutthole, which is why he breaks the fourth wall and creates “memories” with the audience as well.
