Rick & Morty How The Alien Parasites Got Into The Smith House In Season 2

The Adult Swim series Rick and Morty features many ambiguous jokes in which the inexplicable nature of the events is half of the fun; however, regarding the alien parasites that infiltrated the Smith household during the season 2 episode “Total Rickall,” the answer for where they came from is surprisingly straightforward. In fact, the parasites actually first appear a couple episodes earlier.

At the beginning of “Total Rickall,” Rick (Justin Roiland) walks in on the family enjoying breakfast with a never before seen character known as “Uncle Steve,” Jerry’s (Chris Parnell) older brother who has supposedly been living with the Smith family for the past year. After Rick shoots “Uncle Steve” (Tony Barbieri) in the head, he explains that Steve isn’t really their uncle, but rather a telepathic alien parasite that embed itself into their memories in order to take over the planet. When Rick suggests that one of them probably tracked the parasites in on the bottom of their shoe or on a piece of alien fruit, it already seems pretty likely that Rick was the culprit. The true brilliance behind the episode, however, is how it subtly sets up that Rick, someone who claims to be the smartest man in the universe, unknowingly brought the parasites into the house.

In an interview with Cinema Blend, series creator Dan Harmon confirmed the origins of the telepathic parasites. At the end of the season 2 episode “Mortynight Run,” two episodes prior to the parasitic alien infestation featured in “Total Rickall,” Rick is seen loading various glowing green rocks into the trunk of his ship. As he is distracted mocking Morty, Rick unknowingly loads a rock with a pink blob on it. Given that Rick and Morty are on a planet with a wormhole to a dimension containing telepathic beings, it makes sense for that the pink pod to be related to the telepathic parasites seen in “Total Rickall.”

At the beginning of “Total Rickall,” Rick throws the same glowing green rocks into the trash; when observed closely, one can see that the pink blobs on the glowing rocks have multiplied, which insinuates that the parasite infestation had already spread. Apart from the visible evidence, Rick’s own actions also imply that he caused the infestation. Throughout the series, Rick has taken extreme measures in order to hide any evidence that suggests he’s not the genius he claims to be, specifically in the season 3 episode “Morty’s Mind Blowers” when Rick erases all of the memories in which he makes a mistake from Morty’s mind. Taking this into consideration, it’s likely that Rick discovered the infestation on the rocks first, and that’s why he not only threw away the evidence, but why he knew so much about the parasites to begin with.

The scene from “Mortynight Run” also maintains Rick’s overall character arc since Morty was the reason he didn’t notice the pink parasite attached to the rock. As early as season 1 of Rick and Morty, Rick tells Morty that the emotion of love is “just a chemical reaction that compels animals to breed,” and Rick himself is consistently pessimistic about all forms of love, including familial love. The fact that Rick doesn’t notice the parasite because he’s too busy mocking Morty shows, in an unorthodox way, that he does love his grandson — which may be his greatest weakness.
