Rick & Morty Season 4 Episode 2s Good Place Easter Egg Explained

Here’s Rick And Morty season 4 episode 2’s nod to The Good Place explained. Adult Swim’s Rick And Morty is the co-creation of Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland – with the latter voicing the two lead characters – and it’s proven insanely popular since it debuted back in 2013. There’s typically something of a long wait between seasons, and it took over two years for season 4 to arrive.

While Rick And Morty’s fourth was something of a mixed bag overall, it did contain some standouts like “The Vat of Acid Episode” or “Star Mort Rickturn of the Jerri.” There was also “The Old Man And The Seat,” which is split between a story where Rick discovers a trespasser has been using his private lavatory located on a beautiful, isolated planet. This intruder is an alien named Tony (Jeffrey Wright), but despite constant warnings from Rick, Tony keeps coming back to the toilet, making Rick devise elaborate measures to keep him away before it ends in a surprisingly heartbreaking way.

The main story of Rick And Morty season 4 episode 2 sees Jerry help develop a matchmaking app with an alien named Glootie (Taika Waititi). The app – dubbed Lovefinderrz – is a huge hit, but it turns out to be a ploy by Glootie’s race to steal the planet’s water. Beth also has to chase after Summer when she starts using the app and changing “soulmates” constantly. When Beth reunites with Jerry at the end of the episode, it turns out she also downloaded Lovefinderrz, with her match being a Good Place reference.

When she embraces Jerry, she gets a Lovefinderrz notification that reveals none other than actor Ted Danson is her match. Rather than act on it, Beth deletes the app and keeps hugging Jerry. In the Lovefinderrz picture, Danson is dressed exactly like his character Michael from The Good Place – right down to the bowtie and glasses. The typical episode of Rick And Morty is loaded with references to pop culture from Doctor Who to A Nightmare On Elm Street, so it was nice to see a modern favorite like The Good Place added to the list. Even the episode moniker “The Old Man And The Seat” is a reference to Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man And The Sea.

Rick And Morty season 4 episode 2’s nod to The Good Place doesn’t really carry any deeper meaning – besides the fact Beth would be much happier with all-around great guy Ted Danson – but it’s a fun easter egg nonetheless. Maybe Danson could actually make an appearance on the upcoming Rick And Morty season 5, though viewers may have another long wait to find out.
