Riders Republic Ghosts Explained Bots Or Other Players

Riders Republic represents everything that Ubisoft has learned – about bots, AI, open-world structure, and difficulty – from their previous outings into extreme sports, the prime example being their choice to combine the snow and aerial sports from Steep with the ability to switch between the various sports at any time as The Crew did with vehicles. However, one of Riders Republic’s most unique ideas is how the game manages its multiplayer and creates a world that feels active and populated.

Since the world of Riders Republic is created from an amalgamation of U.S. National Parks, it’s safe to say that its world is massive. Making such large open-world spaces feel dense is becoming harder and harder as time goes on, with games like Grand Theft Auto 5’s open world feeling empty to some players. For Ubisoft, the feeling of empty open worlds has been a common critique in recent years, especially in the Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry franchises.

This has also been a critique in their online multiplayer games, though to a lesser extent. The Division struggled with such issues early on, and the lack of new content was one of the reasons some players moved on. While this was remedied in both that game and its sequel, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s England felt sparse in content after the story was completed. However, Riders Republic has seen no sign of this being an issue, and the reason why is quite clever.

How Riders Republic Uses Ghosts Instead Of Bots

Riders Republic Ghosts Explained Bots Or Other Players

One of the common ways that multiplayer games fill out their worlds is by using “bots.” Simply put, bots are AI driven NPC’s that fill empty player space. Sometimes, like in Back 4 Blood, bots are better than players. Yet even as AI gets better and better at creating capable and challenging NPCs, it’s hard to beat the skill and ingenuity of a real person, and Riders Republic decided to avoid this route altogether.

Instead, Riders Republic fills its world with player ghosts, which are basically recordings of other players created by caching their race data. By storing this data and replaying their performance in other races, it essentially allows the player to compete with a real person rather than a bot, albeit asynchronously. These caches also affect the game’s difficulty because Riders Republic has set ranges for performance, meaning that the players with faster times become ghosts for higher difficulties. This helps Riders Republic achieve a player-based difficulty curve, thus skirting around the video game difficulty argument.

How Riders Republic’s Ghosts Work

This method is also far less taxing on servers since it’s not always hosting hundreds of active players, instead choosing to do so only for trick events and Mass Races. The difference in performance is noticeable as well, as the Mass Races have noticeably more lag and dropped frames due to handling 64 players performing complex inputs all at once, whereas the normal races run smoothly. This isn’t to say that there aren’t real players in the world itself. When looking at the map, there is a sea of white dots moving around which represent player ghosts as they explored the map. There are also orange player-shaped icons thrown in the mix and those icons represent players that are playing in real-time, which helps flesh out the world even further. Riders Republic’s approach to live multiplayer and difficulty is ingenious and hopefully continues to see implementation in Ubisoft’s games moving forward.
