The Riverdale season 6 premiere episode takes viewers to the town of Rivervale, which seems to be the core setting of the five-episode event launching the latest installment. For the first five seasons of the hit CW series, the story following Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, and Jughead Jones remained primarily set within the town of Riverdale. In the early days, Riverdale was crafted to emulate an ordinary town, but that has changed in recent seasons after gang wars, and corrupt businessmen like Hiram Lodge have ravaged the area.

More damage was likely done due to the events that closed out Riverdale season 5. Before leaving as a result of an exile, Hiram placed a bomb under Archie’s bed, leaving viewers wondering the fate of multiple characters as a wide-shot teased the Andrews home in flames. In Riverdale season 6, episode 1, “Welcome to Rivervale,” Jughead serves as the host for a Twilight Zone-like storytelling format, introducing the world to the new setting. While Riverdale had its fair share of odd events, Rivervale looks to be taking the unusual elements up a few notches. Not only does Riverdale quickly jump into animal sacrifices, curses, and pregnancies, the series also kills Archie in the season 6 premiere episode.

Logically, the town of Rivervale depicted in the Riverdale season 6 premiere seems like some sort of alternate dimension or reality. Though the shadow town’s inhabitants are the same as Riverdale, everyone’s behavior is exaggerated to a degree. Jughead, for example, often served as Riverdale’s narrator, but in season 6, the character is host aware of the mystery that breaks the fourth wall. Another plausible explanation is that Archie or another character is having a dream, envisioning another version of Riverdale. Maybe the explosion from season 5 results in some kind of coma scenario, causing these events to play out in Archie’s subconscious. This could explain why the Rivervale Archie mentions the bomb to Betty, suggesting the separate interpretations of characters are still linked somehow. Interestingly, Rivervale might not be an alternate dimension, nor a dream of some kind, according to showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.

In an interview (via TVLine), Aguirre-Sacasa confirmed that Rivervale’s existence in Riverdale season 6 lives within the show’s canon. Though he wouldn’t confirm alternate dimensions or dreams, he stated, “things that happen in Rivervale would continue or echo or speak to the events of Riverdale.” Aguirre-Sacasa also mentioned the term “in continuity,” suggesting whatever occurs in Rivervale will affect Riverdale and presumably the main timeline following the five-episode event. That means Archie’s death will remain in the storyline in some fashion. That said, Aguirre-Sacasa likely has a few tricks up his sleeves with the rest of the Rivervale story.

One of the most anticipated elements of the Rivervale story and Riverdale season 6 is the arrival of Sabrina Spellman. The character from Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will officially make her CW series debut for a crossover event despite dying in her own show. Her presence and the confirmation of witchcraft in Riverdale certainly open the door for mysterious towns like Rivervale. Magic and spells could be a fitting explanation for the Rivervale setting switch, especially after Cheryl Blossom’s recent obsession with the occult. While many questions remain, Riverdale will likely clear up some of the mysteries surrounding “the town you’ll never want to leave…” in Rivervale.
