Rob Zombie’s The Munsters movie is confirmed with an official logo. The classic ‘60s style of wholesome family sitcom received a monstrous makeover with the original Munsters TV show, which aired for two seasons and 70 episodes on CBS.

But of course The Munsters was itself a perfectly wholesome bit of entertainment, as it depicted the home life of a family of monsters inspired by the Univeral movies of the 1930s. There was Fred Gwynne as the patriarch Herman Munster, Yvonne De Carlo as Lily Munster, Al Lewis as Grandpa, Beverly Owen and later Pat Priest as Marilyn Munster and of course Butch Patrick as Eddie Munster. These same Munsters would later star in the theatrical film Munster, Go Home!, followed by an animated film and finally a 1981 TV movie. The title was was revived with a new cast for 1995’s Here Come the Munsters, and again with another new cast for 1996’s The Munsters’ Scary Little Christmas. The Wayans Brothers were supposed to produce their own Munsters revival in the early 2000s but the project never came to fruition. Bryan Fuller did develop a TV reboot called Mockingbird Lane that aired one special but was never picked up to series.

The latest attempt to revive The Munsters will come from a man who is known for his love of everything related to horror, though his version of horror tends to be the opposite of wholesome. Halloween director Zombie confirmed the news himself on Instagram, also posting a Munsters logo. See the image in the space below:

Reports that Zombie was working on a Munsters movie first surfaced earlier this year. It was later reported that Zombie’s Munsters project would be released simultaneously on Peacock and in theaters. The cast was reported to include Jeff Daniel Phillips as Herman Munster and Sheri Moon Zombie as Lily Munster, with Dan Roebuck, Jorge Garcia, Richard Brake and Cassandra “Elvira” Peterson also in the cast. Zombie says in his Instagram post that he’s been trying to make a Munsters movie for 20 years so obviously this is a big passion project for him.

Zombie of course first made his name as a musical artist but later transitioned to film directing with incredibly gruesome horror movies like House of 1000 Corpses, The Devil’s Rejects and of course his Halloween reboot film (which original Halloween director John Carpenter famously did not like). It remains to be seen how Zombie will bring his own particular horror vision to bear on The Munsters, but it’s safe to assume he will at least somewhat tone down his gory tendencies as he tackles a beloved family-friendly title. Then again, perhaps Zombie means to take his version of The Munsters in a completely different direction and leave wholesomeness behind. It’s true that Zombie has tackled bizarre families in his prior films, so in a strange way he seems well-suited to revive The Munsters. On the other hand, many did not care for how he handled Halloween, so perhaps there’s reason to be wary of what he’ll do to Herman and the gang.
