The Munsters director Rob Zombie reveals the recreated electric chair from the original series. The Munsters is a reboot of the 1960s series of the same name, originally airing on CBS for 70 episodes. Zombie, previously known for his work in the horror genre through House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil’s Rejects, is bringing his passion for the genre to a much wider audience through the family-friendly The Munsters.

The Munsters follows the titular family, a group of benign monsters living in a typical American suburb, including Frankenstein’s monster, vampires, and a werewolf. The comedic thrust from the show came from the family viewing themselves as a run-of-the-mill family despite their macabre appearances, similar to The Addams Family which aired around the same time. Zombie has previously teased the recreation of the iconic The Munsters house for the film.

The new image was posted on Zombie’s Instagram (@robzombieofficial) and shows the electric chair from a few angles. Zombie’s caption reads “It wouldn’t be The Munsters without comfortable furniture. Here is a little gem our prop department whipped up.” The chair appears to have a wooden frame with leather padding down the back, as well as two conductors on the top which connect to a metal rod with a cable running up to it. This connects to the dome on the top which would then conduct electricity into the user’s head, with arm and leg straps presumably to keep the victim from standing up. Check it out below:

The Munsters cast will include previous Zombie collaborators including Jeff Daniel Phillips, Dan Roebuck, and his wife Sheri Moon Zombie. The film is currently being shot in Hungary, with a slated release for Fall 2022, with a simultaneous release in theaters and streaming on Peacock. The adaptation is the first successful attempt after many failures to bring The Munsters to a modern audience.

Zombie seems to be making a similar choice to horror director and fellow Splat Pack member Eli Roth, who made his name with gory horror films, but found success with the fantasy comedy The House with a Clock in Its Walls back in 2018. This seems to be a similar move for Zombie, with the family-friendly The Munsters allowing him to find a more mainstream audience. Whether or not the transition will work for Zombie the way it worked for Roth, The Munsters is sure to be a nostalgic comfort for old fans, while allowing new fans to discover the macabre slice of life for themselves.
