Robert Pattinson Took Two Major Roles From Henry Cavill

Henry Cavill is most famous for his role as Superman in the 2013 film Man of Steel, which is the first entry in the DC Extended Universe. He has also starred alongside Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown in Enola Holmes and played the iconic Geralt in Netflix’s adaptation of The Witcher. However, despite his current widespread acclaim, the star could have made it big in the film industry much earlier if he hadn’t lost roles in both Harry Potter and Twilight to Robert Pattinson.

The first time the actors crossed paths was when Cavill auditioned for the role of Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which was the fourth film adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s popular book series. While it was a minor role, Cedric’s death at the hands of Peter Pettigrew was one of the most devastating losses in the Harry Potter franchise, making it a very coveted part. The role went to Pattinson, however, and it helped him catch the eye of many directors and led to his success as Edward Cullen in the Twilight film series.

And the infamous vampire franchise is the second instance of Pattinson getting in Cavill’s way. Before the first film installment of the Twilight franchise was released in 2008, author Stephanie Meyer labeled Cavill her “perfect Edward” in a 2007 blog post. But Meyer continued the post by expressing her sadness that Cavill was currently 24 years old and therefore unable to portray 17-year-old Edward. Eager to keep Cavill involved in the production, however, she proposed he could play Carlisle, but that role ended up going to Peter Facinelli.

Despite Meyer’s opinion that Cavill was the perfect fit to play Edward, the Twilight author never approached him to express any interest in casting him for the role, and the part eventually went to 21-year-old Pattinson. Years later, Pattinson’s success with Twilight and several indie flicks would lead to him being cast as the Dark Knight in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. Funnily enough, it was once rumored Cavill was rejected to play Bruce Wayne in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, but the actor shut down the rumors in an uncomfortable 2009 News Channel 5 interview.

Fortunately, bigger and better things came for the beloved Man of Steel actor after he fell short to Pattinson. And, despite taking very different paths, Cavill and Pattinson both played iconic DC heroes, making them part of an illustrious fraternity that will surely make Cavill forget about the hardships Pattinson brought his way.

To see Pattinson’s newest role, The Batman is in theaters now.
