Robins Deadly New Tournament Has The Rules Of A Video Game

Warning Spoilers ahead for Robin #2

In the latest issue of DC Comics’ Robin, Damian Wayne has entered a deadly tournament that has the rules of a video game. Due to his estrangement with his father Batman, Damian has been forging a new path on his own. Furthermore, his recent discovery involving the League of Lazarus has motivated him to investigate and enter their Lazarus Tournament, a lethal contest pitting the deadliest fighters in the DC Universe. While the first issue of Robin’s new series saw his arrival to the League’s hidden island, this new issue has Damian learning the rules of the Lazarus Tournament, which is apparently much more than a simple fight to the death.

In Robin #1 from writer Joshua Williamson and artist Gleb Melnikov, Damian secured his entrance into the contest by taking down King Snake, the father of Bane. However, once he and the other fighters arrived to Lazarus Island, Damian was way too bold and cocky, challenging anyone and everyone to prove his worth. As a result, he was quickly killed by the new fighter known as Flatline, who ripped Damian’s heart out. Even so, this was not the end for Damian Wayne, which he would have known had he not been so impatient.

Now, Robin #2 sees Damian waking up, having been resurrected thanks to the island’s power and its possession of one of the largest Lazarus pits in the DC Universe. Thankfully, Rose Wilson’s Ravager has taken it upon herself to fill the Son of Batman in and serve as a mentor, letting him know the rules of the tournament which are not unlike those of a video game. For example, Ravager reveals that each contender has extra lives, which had been explained to everyone else after Robin was killed and lost his first.

Not only does each fighter have three lives, but Ravager also clues Robin into his main competition. In keeping with the video game theme, these would be the “bosses”. First, there’s the new Respawn, whose definitely patterned his look after Ravager’s father Deathstroke, ten-year-old XXL who looks to have pyro-kinetic powers, Flatline (who Robin’s already familiar with), and Black Swan, a lethal dancer who once killed her entire dance troupe as well as the audience. However, there also appears to be a more formidable final boss, and it’s none other than Conner Hawke, the secret son of the Green Arrow and for some reason an agent of the League of Shadows. Not only that, but the reward for winning is immortality.

In any case, Damian seems very determined to prove his worth in the contest, while also trying to find out why the League of Lazarus was kept hidden from him by both his mother and father in the first place. Either way, Damian’s typically bold and brash personality has already cost him one life. Two more and it’s game over for Robin for good. Now that he knows the contest’s rules, here’s hoping Damian will be able to come out on top and get to bottom of whatever’s going on with this new sect of the League.
