In HBO’s Titans, Dick Grayson’s brutal training as Robin makes Batman even darker in the DC series (and possibly, too dark). In episode 2 of the new season, Dick Grayson’s Nightwing breaks Scarecrow out of prison to draw out Red Hood, though Dr. Crane himself tries to manipulate Dick towards his own ends, getting the former Robin to talk about his past training with the Dark Knight. Apparently, Bruce Wayne forced Dick into some pretty dark and traumatic experiences in his attempt to turn his fear into a weapon to be wielded, and his methods were quite brutal.
Thus far in HBO’s Titans, Dick Grayson’s Robin successor Jason Todd was killed by the Joker but has since been resurrected as the darker Red Hood, targeting Dick and the Titans themselves who’ve come to Gotham. The team’s arrival was in response to Bruce Wayne leaving the city after killing the Joker, telling Nightwing to “Be a better Batman.” Now, Dick is struggling with the concept of stepping into his surrogate father’s shoes, all while his friends are in danger of being killed by Jason’s Red Hood. As a result, Dick has decided to break Scarecrow out of prison believing that Crane is Jason’s accomplice, and it’s here in Titans season 3, episode 2 where Dick reveals his dark training to become Batman’s first Robin.
As Scarecrow tries to get inside Nightwing’s head after being taken to a cabin in the woods, Dick shares his time training with Batman in this same cabin where he was taught to turn his fear into a weapon. Apparently, Bruce was adamant that Dick (and later Jason) learn that “fear is your friend”, forcing them to go out into the forest on their own to face the darkness and unknown as young children. In Dick’s case, the former Robin reveals that he was chased by a hungry wolf in the dead of night, painting a picture of severe child endangerment on Batman’s part. While some would argue that that’s par for the course considering what Bruce Wayne was training Dick Grayson and Jason Todd for, it gets worse. Dick ended up conquering his fears in the darkest way possible by killing and beheading the wolf with a knife: “I shouldn’t have been afraid of the wolf. The wolf should have been afraid of me.” Furthermore, it seems as though Batman was actually proud of Dick’s brutal deed.
While becoming something to be feared tracks with Batman’s entire methodology as a vigilante in his crusade against criminals, Dick beheading an animal for survival as a young and no doubt traumatized kid is about the cruellest and most compromised way to get that mindset translated, even for the Dark Knight. Combined with his killing of the Joker, it certainly seems as though the Titans version of Batman is much darker and way more brutal than past depictions or the Dark Knight of the comics.
Rather than coming alongside and supporting Dick to conquer his fears and wield the emotion in a more positive manner, Bruce being proud of young Dick’s murderous act no doubt set the tone for a much darker Robin and Nightwing, which has been fairly evident as the HBO series has progressed thus far. In any case, Nightwing is clearly at a crossroads where he needs to make some decisions aout how he’s going to protect Gotham. Will it be using darkness and fear like his former mentor, or will he forge his own path as the leader of the Titans and choose his own brighter path to seek justice in the city? Titans fans will likely find out as the third season continues on HBO Max.
