Rockstar Should Finish GTA 6 Before They Release A Movie

Even though no details have been confirmed, including whether the game is underway or not, there remains strong speculation that Rockstar Games is, in fact, moving forward with Grand Theft Auto 6. It’s been seven years since 2013’s GTA 5 released and anticipation has never been higher for a new installment in the long-running franchise, especially with the promise of better next-gen graphics.

Although fans have been hoping for details about GTA 6 – namely anything that confirms the game is happening – it appears there’s something else GTA-related that’s in the works. Multiple publications have reported on rumors that a movie based around the events of GTA 5 is currently in early stages of development. Details of the movie’s plot remain unclear, but if it is true, it’s likely that the movie will incorporate the video game’s three main protagonists in some capacity.

The problem is that while a GTA-themed movie could be a hit if executed well, it’s not what the fanbase has been hoping for. For years, there have been rumors about if and when the sixth installment in the Grand Theft Auto franchise will release. With the reveal of the next-gen consoles arriving in time for this year’s holiday season, there were expectations that Rockstar would make some sort of announcement pertaining to GTA 6. But with nothing confirmed, players have at least a few more years to wait, if not longer. Releasing a GTA movie before the game would feel a bit like a slap in the face to those who’ve been waiting literal years for a new video game. Plus, if the company releases a GTA movie following the launch of GTA 6, or at least following an announcement about the game’s existence, the newer game would help raise excitement about the franchise, thereby potentially leading to more ticket sales. Releasing it before the game, however, may simply leave players frustrated with the franchise and wanting more.

What To Expect From A GTA 5 Movie

A movie based on GTA 5 could go in a lot of directions. It could act as a prequel, exploring Michael’s life of crime before he retired and entered witness protection. It could also explore events after the end of the video game and provide context for what the three protagonists got up to after the fact. Or, it could of course simply re-tell the events of GTA 5, but in live-action form.

While it’s likely a movie based on GTA 5 would follow the video game’s lead characters, with nothing confirmed, it remains unclear who would step into the roles of Michael, Trevor, and Franklin. However, there’s a good possibility that the original voice actors could be involved in some capacity. Ned Luke, for example, the voice behind Michael de Santa, recently said he would love to reprise the role in a DLC. His willingness to step back into Michael’s shoes could be a sign he’d be open to working on a movie. “I would love to do DLC,” he told The Gamer. “That would be awesome.” He added that he had a lot of flexibility in the original role – something that could serve him well if he were to work on a movie version. “I was given a lot of freedom to improvise and that helped my character,” Luke explained. “[Director] Rod Edge would give us so much freedom, but if we were doing something that didn’t work, he’d let us know.”

For now, both the rumored GTA movie as well as GTA 6 remains only speculation, and fans of the franchise will have to sit tight and wait for further news about either.
