Rockstars Most Overlooked NonGTA Game

Rockstar Games has etched itself into gaming history with its roster of highly praised open-world and adventure games. Franchises like Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption have set new bars for virtual worlds, and even its lesser-known games, like Manhunt and Bully, have cult followings. Yet, several Rockstar titles are largely forgotten, like Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition Remix, despite their quality.

Midnight Club was an arcade racing game series Rockstar developed in competition with the Need For Speed series. The games focused on wild, high-speed street races instead of striving to be realistic simulators, but they were better known for their open-world urban environments. Midnight Club included depictions of New York City, Los Angeles, San Diego, Atlanta, London, Tokyo, and more throughout its nine-year existence. The most recent entry, Midnight Club: Los Angeles – Complete Edition, was released in 2009. The franchise has laid dormant ever since, but 2006’s Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition Remix remains a highlight of the genre.

Dub Edition Remix was an updated version of Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition that came out a year later and included 24 new vehicles, added a map of Toyko, and introduced more songs. It was essentially the original game with more content tacked on, before DLC updates were commonplace in the games industry. More Midnight Club 3 meant more of a good thing, as its frenetic arcade gameplay, in-depth car customization (complete with numerous licensed cars and car parts belonging to real-world brands), detailed open world, and catchy soundtrack made it stand out from other street racing games. It launched on PS2 and Xbox and was added to the PlayStation Network for PS3 in December 2012, but its digital version only lasted a few years.

Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition Remix Is Rockstar’s Most Obscure Game

Sometime between 2014 and 2015, Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition Remix was silently removed from the PlayStation Store. Neither Rockstar nor Sony addressed its disappearance, but it’s presumed to have been taken down due to licensing issues. The game included a massive track list of 124 songs from popular hip-hop, rock, and electronic artists, along with its many real-world car brands. Maintaining all of those licensing contracts for a nearly 10-year-old game might have been more trouble than it was worth. This likely led Rockstar to drop the game – and, perhaps, the entire franchise – which soon became thoroughly overshadowed by GTA.

Much of players could do in the Midnight Club series is now possible in GTA. Rockstar has incorporated elements of the racing franchise into its open-world adventures, like GTA 5’s car customization and licensed music and the various vehicles added in routine updates to GTA Online. Still, GTA doesn’t include the licensed car customization of Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition Remix or the franchises’ recreations of actual cities, leaving some of the most beloved aspects of the Rockstar racing series in obscurity.
