Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is easily one of the most popular online multiplayer games in the world right now, and with the Warzone battle royale mode set to drop any day now, it will likely only grow in popularity. However, Activision has consistently released a new Call of Duty game every year since 2005, and it has no plans to stop any time soon. A new Call of Duty has already been confirmed for 2020, but as it turns out, it may end up being Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered as opposed to a completely brand new, original project.

This rumor comes from Twitter user Okami, who has accurately leaked Call of Duty information in the past. More specifically, they leaked the existence of the Modern Warfare Gunfight beta before it was officially announced, which gives their claims a little more credibility. Now Okami has made some claims about the Modern Warfare Warzone mode, but has also said that a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered game is coming out this year.

Okami originally made this claim on February 28, but has reiterated it in a tweet with Warzone information. They say that once the Warzone information is confirmed, it will let fans know that Okami is also telling the truth about Modern Warfare 2 Remastered coming out this year. As far as the Warzone information goes, Okami claims that the Warzone release date is March 10, that a trailer is coming Thursday, March 6 or Monday, March 9, and that it will be a free-to-play, separate client from Modern Warfare. Okami also says that Warzone will be squads only.

So if Okami is telling the truth, then fans will know by Tuesday, March 10. And if Okami is telling the truth about certain details, like Warzone being squads only and a free-to-play, separate client from Modern Warfare, then it would indeed lend more credibility to their Modern Warfare 2 Remastered claims. However, there are other reasons to think that Modern Warfare 2 Remastered could be coming out this year instead of a new Call of Duty game.

For one, Activision has so far declined to reveal the developer of this year’s Call of Duty game, which is likely due to Treyarch having to take over the project from Sledgehammer Games and Raven Software. It’s possible that Treyarch needs more time to finish its game, and so Modern Warfare 2 Remastered will be releasing this year instead. Secondly, this isn’t even the first time that we’ve heard of Modern Warfare 2 Remastered. In fact, a ratings board leaked Modern Warfare 2 Remastered last year, so there’s more evidence than just Okami’s claims.

Of course, it’s possible that Modern Warfare 2 Remastered will launch this year alongside a brand new Call of Duty, like how Modern Warfare Remastered release with Infinite Warfare. It’s also possible that it’s not in development at all. While there is indeed evidence that Modern Warfare 2 Remastered could exist in some capacity, fans should still take these claims with a massive grain of salt. Like any video game rumor, fans should wait for a confirmation from an official source before getting too excited.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered is rumored to be in development for unspecified platforms.
