Honey Davenport, who competed for the title of “America’s Next Drag Superstar” on RuPaul’s Drag Race season 11, is mere weeks away from releasing their debut EP LOVE IS GOD. The collection of five songs, which drops Jan. 14, was penned in the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic and promotes an inspiring message of positivity. This queen’s Drag Race dream may have been cut short after one of the most memorable lip sync battles in the show’s history, but Honey’s early elimination spurred them to pursue their goal of not only being a drag star, but a successful recording artist.[/caption]

On the third episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race season 11, a whopping six queens were forced to simultaneously lip sync for their lives. Following a battle to the tune of Jennifer Lopez’s “Waiting For Tonight,” Ru chose Honey to “sashay away.” Though admittedly heartbroken, Honey used the setback to propel themselves forward. Since appearing on Drag Race, Honey has released nine singles, including “Draw The Blood,” which debuted at No. 26 on iTunes. Honey’s background also includes performing in the Broadway national tour of Hairspray, launching two YouTube series and promoting body positivity (and the results of their daily squats) on Twitter.

Now, Honey is ready to unveil their latest project to the world, LOVE IS GOD. “It’s a dream come true,” Honey said of the project in an exclusive interview with Screen Rant. “When I was in quarantine, I felt like I was being tested. My love was being tested. The world was being tested. Our government was being tested. Everything. I wanted to write about what it would be like when it got better, as opposed to writing about how I felt at that very moment.” For Honey, writing during the pandemic served as an escape. “I thought, ‘This is happening right now, but my love will last through this,'” reflected Honey.

LOVE IS GOD features an all-star lineup of fellow queens, including Honey’s “auntie” Manila Luzon. The title track with Manila was inspired by ABBA and “Europop fun,” and has a bright, high-energy music video to go along with it. Other queens on the EP include Drag Race contestants Jackie Cox, Tammie Brown and LaLa Ri, along with house DJ and nightlife legend Kevin Aviance on the song “Thrive.” Honey said of the collaborations, “I wrote each one catered to the artist that I knew I was gonna be working with. And every single song has its own influence. It’s music that got me through the pandemic.” Divas such as Lady Gaga and Rihanna inspired much of the EP.

Along with the release of LOVE IS GOD, fans can expect in January a music video for “Thrive,” which is about “overcoming all of the coping mechanisms that you’ve allowed to slip back into your life during COVID. I don’t know about you, but I definitely was purchasing a few more bottles of wine than I normally would have.” The video, which Honey directed and choreographed, draws influence from the grunginess of Janet Jackson’s “The Pleasure Principle” and the sparkle of Kylie Minogue’s “Say Something.”

With the release of the EP, Honey Davenport has a few goals in mind. The first is to fill the missing spot for a mainstream drag recording artist. The second is to help listeners feel a sense of love after the trials and tribulations of the past 20-plus months. “I hope that this music inspires positive outcomes in everybody who listens to it,” said Honey. “I hope people listen to this and realize that love can overcome anything. It has no boundaries.”
