Rupert Grint On Harry Potter Franchise Return Possibility After Reunion

Actor Rupert Grint comments on the possibility of returning to the Harry Potter franchise as Ron Weasley. Grint played Weasley for the entire Harry Potter saga, which ran for eight films over the course of ten years. Weasley is the loyal, goofy, and steadfast best friend of Harry Potter, as played by Daniel Radcliffe, and the love interest of Hermoine Granger, their gifted and tenacious Hogwarts schoolmate, played by Emma Watson. The three actors spent their childhood working on the films and will reunite for the 20th anniversary of the first film, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, in an HBO Max Harry Potter reunion special that will bring together cast and crew from the series to celebrate the franchise.

Created by author JK Rowling, the Harry Potter series follows the adventures of the titular character, a boy whose magical parents were killed by an evil wizard, who left the child with a mark that would tie them together forever. When Harry comes of age, he ventures off to Hogwarts, a wizarding school that trains young witches and wizards in the arts of magic. Harry and his friends, including Ron and Hermoine, must navigate the world of magic while also dealing with the typical challenges of childhood and adolescence, as well as the looming threat of the evil wizard Voldemort plotting his return.

In an interview with ComicBook, Grint commented on the possibility of returning to the franchise, noting that it’s not something he’s gone back and thought about much until recently, as the 20th anniversary of the first film approaches. Grint says that it’s great to see everyone from the cast and crew again, but also believes that it “ended at the right time.” While the actor is “fond of everyone” from those films, he says he has a “new perspective” on it all and can “appreciate” the experience for what it was. In terms of another movie or series, Grint is reluctant to say anything definitive:

… It’s been 10 years since we shot the last one. I have a new perspective, I can appreciate it for what it is, a mad, enormously fun time. As far as another movie, I don’t know. I don’t know, exactly. I love that character, I feel very connected to him, so yeah, I don’t know.

Grint has since moved on from the Harry Potter franchise, starring in a number of TV projects, including a series adaptation of Guy Ritchie’s Snatch. The actor also appeared in the series Sick Note, as well as the TV mini series The ABC Murders, based on the Agatha Christie novel. He is currently starring in the Apple TV+ series Servant from producer M. Night Shyamalan, which just got renewed for a fourth season. He’ll next appear in Guillermo del Toro’s anthology series Guillermo del Toro Presents 10 After Midnight.

With the upcoming anniversary special on HBO Max, Harry Potter will certainly be thrust back into the conversation. Grint, along with Radcliffe and Watson, are now at a perfect age to pick up the franchise again, this time as adults. With the Fantastic Beasts series failing to launch the same kind of hype as Harry Potter, it would seem wise to at least explore what a continuation of the original Harry Potter characters would look like. Of course, without involving JK Rowling, who continues to be pushed away from the franchise she created, it would seem like a half-hearted effort, but if WB can find a way to make it happen, seeing Grint’s Weasley back in his wizarding robes with Radcliffe and Watson as adults in the Wizarding World would be a welcome treat for fans that grew up with the series.
