RWBY, at seven volumes now, is an anime series that focuses on the team of characters that provided its title. That team isn’t the only one central to the storyline. Playing a major role over the course of the series is the team formerly known as JNPR. Featuring Nora Valkyrie, Pyrrha Nikos, and Lie Ren, and led by Jaune Arc, the team has become RWBY’s primary backup on their mission to save the world.

In the early episodes of the anime, Jaune Arc seemed like an odd choice for team leader. He was clumsy and had little experience in a fight, but he proved himself a quick thinker and strategizer. Now, he’s a fan favorite that so many people just want to know more about.

10 Who Inspires Jaune

All of Jaune’s team takes their inspiration from heroes who had to dress as a different gender at one point in their stories. In Jaune’s case, that hero is Joan of Arc. While Joan of Arc is known for men not believing her warnings and dying for her beliefs, she also dressed as a man in order to fight for the French army. Other than Jaune’s name, there aren’t a ton of nods to her history in his story arc. He does, however, have his own enemy that provides a nod. Cardin Winchester, the boy who bullies Jaune in the first volume, is inspired by Henry Beaufort, a Cardinal of the Catholic Church and the Bishop of Winchester, who was involved in the trial of Joan of Arc.

Jaune also got his own chance to wear clothes typically assigned to the female gender as he wore a dress to a dance at Beacon because of a promise he made to Pyrrha Nikkos.

9 What Does His Name Mean

The main cast of characters frequently have names – or at the very least, team names – that provide a nod to a color scheme. Jaune’s name does as well.

Though his name provides a nod to Joan of Arc, the word “jaune” actually translates to “yellow” in French. Yellow is the color found in accent pieces of his armor and, eventually, the color that appears when he uses his Semblance. It’s also possible that his surname provides some additional meaning. “Arc in cielo” translates to rainbow, and the emblem passed down to Jaune on his armor is of a golden rainbow.

Miles Luna provides the voice for Jaune. For longtime RWBY fans, that name should sound familiar. He’s also a writer and director for RWBY.

Luna isn’t always comfortable with pulling double duty as writer and voice, however. It was revealed in a Reddit: Ask Me Anything session with other members of the team that he worries about the fan perception when he’s both writing and voicing a character. Not wanting fans to believe Jaune is his way of inserting his own personality into the series, he prefers one of the other writers to steer Jaune’s arcs instead.

7 How Many Battles Has Jaune Won

When Jaune began the series, he was the least experienced of the characters. In fact, he could barely use his own weapons. With a lot of training and help from his team, he’s progressed extremely far in his abilities over the course of the seven volumes.

Despite that inexperience, he hasn’t lost many battles in his time on the show. Of the 17 fights he’s participated in, he’s only truly lost three. One of those was his bully Cardin besting him. Another was Cinder Fall beating him. The third? That would be his team losing out to Team RWBY during a food fight. In the rest of his battles, he and his allies always prevail.

6 What Is His Semblance

Jaune’s official name for his Semblance is Aura Amp. The ability is just as its name implies.

Jaune, though he doesn’t unlock his Semblance until late in the series, is able to grasp his power very quickly. He can use his aura to literally amp anyone else’s. By doing that, he’s giving a power boost to someone’s own ability to heal (like he does with Weiss Schnee when Cinder nearly fatally injures her), or boosting their ability to use their Semblance (like he has multiple times with Lie Ren, allowing his teammate to hide the emotions of large groups of people).

5 How Is His Weapon Significant

When the series began, fans learned something interesting about the weapons used by Hunters. The weapons weren’t generic ones chosen at random. Instead, they were tailored to each individual skillset. In the case of Ruby Rose, she even made her own. Jaune, however, didn’t have a weapon made just for him. Originally, he had one that belonged to his grandfather. Crocea Mors was a sword and shield set passed down in the family. His grandfather used it in a war. H was the only Beacon student to inherit his weapon.

His weapon became even more significant following the third volume. He salvaged Pyrrha’s damaged weapons following her death and had their metal combined with his own to upgrade his sword and shield. It’s not only a reminder of the friend he lost, but a better weapon suited to his needs as his sword now has an additional convertible blade.

4 How Strong Is Jaune

It’s not clear exactly how strong Jaune is because we don’t know the weights of specific items, or for that matter, Grimm, in the world of Remnant. What we do know is that it takes a serious amount of strength to battle a Grimm or someone with more power.

In the case of Jaune, he appears to be at least on par with Yang Xiao Long. Both have been shown, when not using their Semblances, to be able to hold various Grimm at bay on their own. Likewise, Jaune was able to hold his own against Cinder Fall before she began using the full force of her powers. His strikes with his sword are enough to cut a Grimm down in one blow and see the physical effects through the air. He’s definitely stronger than the average Hunter.

3 Why Does He Wear A Red Sash

Beginning in the fourth volume, Jaune started wearing an unusual accessory with his clothing. Around his waist, viewers can see a red sash.

Like the new markings on his shield to memorialize Pyrrha, this sash is also a nod to his fallen friend. Pyrrha wore a red sash around her waist with her armor. Eagle-eyed fans will also notice that Jaune’s not the only one to add red to his wardrobe in her honor. Nora and Ren also have red accents in their clothing as a nod to their teammate.

2 Does He Prefer Coffee Or Tea

Just like in the real world, there’s a bit of a debate between hot beverages in the world of Remnant. Blake Belladonna, for example, seems to prefer tea, while her teammates like their coffee. Jaune falls into the latter camp.

In fact, volume seven has used Jaune’s love of coffee to show the evolution of his friendship with new character Marrow. Marrow has taken Jaune’s cup of coffee when given the opportunity. Eventually, Jaune started bringing one for his new friend as well.

1 How Does Ruby Have Jaune Saved In Her Scroll

Friends don’t always use one another’s given names to save them to their phones in the real world, so it should be no surprise that friends do the same with their scrolls in RWBY.

In Ruby’s scroll, his contact information is listed as “Vomit Boy,” calling way back to the very first episode of the series. That’s the name she and Yang called Jaune when he got sick on Yang’s shoes on the way to Beacon Academy. He might not love the nickname, but it’s a nice reminder of where the two friends started.
