Ryan Murphy Already Teased The Best Theme For An Upcoming AHS Season

American Horror Story co-creator Ryan Murphy previously teased a perfect theme option for a future season. The horror anthology series first debuted in 2011 before becoming a pillar in FX’s slate of original programming. A decade later, American Horror Story is still going strong, with the series gearing up to debut season 10, subtitled Double Feature. Considering three more seasons have been ordered, in addition to a spinoff series, American Horror Stories, Murphy has plenty of opportunities to develop intriguing themes, including his take on Christmas Horror.

As part of American Horror Story’s anthology format, each season is meant to center on a different setting with a fresh set of characters. First, there was Murder House, a season that documented a sinister Los Angeles property. Next came a 1960s setting in Asylum, a season dedicated to modern-day witches in Coven, and an installment focused on a 1950s Florida sideshow in Freak Show. After Hotel, Roanoke, and Cult, American Horror Story developed its first crossover season with Apocalypse, blending elements from Murder House and Coven. Most recently, the season went back in time again for a theme dedicated to the beloved slasher genre in 1984.

When American Horror Story season 10 was announced as Double Feature, Murphy explained the installment would be split into two parts: one set by the sea and one set on the shore. Whereas the plot of part one seems to be developed, the co-creator hinted that part 2 was still in the works. Murphy then teased his intent in expanding the AHS universe, asking fans to vote on which themes they would like to see. Out of the possible options were Aliens, Christmas Horror, Bloody Mary, Piggy Man, Sirens, and Plague. With the mention of Double Feature in his query, it’s assumed one of these themes will be featured in part two of season 10. A few days later, Murphy took to Twitter again, claiming Aliens, Bloody Mary, Sirens, and Plague were in the final four for consideration. Missing is the Christmas-themed option, despite being the best chance to fully dive into the holiday subgenre of horror.

Though Christmas Horror didn’t make the cut for season 10, American Horror Story still has time based on the planned future of the series. This would give the series a chance to pay tribute to titles like Black Christmas, Silent Night, Deadly Night, or Krampus. The series has never devoted an installment to a specific holiday, and Christmas could serve as the most fitting backdrop. Whereas horror tales set around Halloween have saturated the genre, the December holiday still has a small connection to the genre without being overdone. The specific setting also allows for a different timeline when airing the series, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Interestingly enough, past American Horror Story seasons have featured brief glimpses into the world of Christmas within the series. In Murder House, the ghosts of the Harmon family were shown decorating their house for Christmas in the season finale. Asylum, the next season, featured an entire episode titled “Unholy Night,” set around Christmas. It memorably featured Ian McShane portraying Leigh Emerson, a man dressed as Santa Claus as he went on a killing spree. The event was later touched on when season 8’s Bubbles McGee was cast in a movie called A Christmas to Dismember, which involved a mass murder dressed as Santa. Seeing as American Horror Story has already laid the foundation, fully committing to a Christmas-themed season could truly pay off if the series wants to explore the most appealing subgenres by series end.
