Sam Claflins Cut Role In Pirates of The Caribbean Dead Men Tell No Tales

Sam Claflin’s Philip Swift almost returned in Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales – here’s how he figured into the story. Claflin’s Philip was introduced in the fourth entry Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, where his missionary Philip fell in love with Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey’s Syrena, who is also a mermaid. The duo was designed to replace Keira Knightley’s Elizabeth and Orlando Bloom’s Will, the romantic leads of the first three movies in the saga.

Of course, it’s strange to reflect on the insane success of the Pirates Of The Caribbean movies series. There’s an alternate universe where Disney instead greenlit a Pirates Of The Caribbean straight to video movie starring Christopher Walken, as they were worried about making a big-budget pirate movie. They were also horrified by Johnny Depp’s hammy turn as Jack, but this proved to be a major selling point of the original, which became a surprise megahit. Two more sequels followed in 2006 and 2007, before Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides set sail in 2011.

On Stranger Tides focused around the Fountain of Youth as the main quest, with Philip and Syrena proving the sequel’s prerequisite love story. The movie ended with a wounded Philip being pulled into the water by Syrena so his injuries would be healed. Those hoping Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales would reveal the fate of the pair would be disappointed, as neither appear. That said, an early script for Pirates Of The Caribbean 5 did feature the return of Sam Claflin’s Philip, who had become a cartographer who was searching for his lost love.

This take on Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales would have featured a look at the mermaid kingdom, with Syrena on the search for the Trident Of Neptune, which acted as this draft’s MacGuffin. The sting for poor Philip is that Syrena forgot about him after returning to the sea, but she can remember him on the land. This draft also featured a villain called the Sea Widow, but reportedly, a big reason this story was rewritten was the Depp nixed the idea because he had just made Dark Shadows, which also featured a female antagonist.

In the final version of Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Kaya Scodelario’s Carina and Brenton Thwaites’ Henry Turner formed the central love story. Sam Claflin’s Philip would have ended the unused version of Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales with another broken heart. In the end, Syrena had to return to the sea once again with the Trident, which means she’ll forget about their romance. In fitting with this draft’s darker tone, the story commits to the tragedy of their situation and she leaves Philip to return home. That said, there’s nothing to say they couldn’t be reunited again in a future outing.
