Saved By The Bell Where Mr Belding Is In The Reboot

Dennis Haskins became a fan favorite for his portrayal of Mr. Richard Belding in Saved by the Bell, so why wasn’t he a part of the recent reboot? Premiering on Peacock in November, the reboot’s premise takes shape when California Governor Zack Morris (Mark Paul-Gosselaar) makes the controversial decision to shutter several low-income schools. Facing backlash, Zack proposes sending the displaced students to the far more affluent Bayside High. Jessie Spano (Elizabeth Berkley Lauren) and A.C. Slater (Mario Lopez), formerly enrolled at Bayside in the original, are now employees at the school and do their best to welcome the new students — but the parents of the rich kids prove to be nowhere near as welcoming.

Although the reboot is focused on a new generation of characters, it also serves as a clear continuation of the 1990s sitcom. Tiffani Thiessen reprises her role as Kelly Morris, while Lark Voorhies cameos as Lisa Turtle. Even relatively minor characters, such as the math teacher Mr. Dewey, show up for a quick appearance in a few scenes. Given that the Peacock series pulls off the impressive task of improving on the original while also honoring it, why wasn’t a pivotal character like Mr. Belding included? Belding appeared on Good Morning, Miss Bliss in 1988 all the way to Saved by the Bell: The New Class which ended in 2000. Along the way, he became a mentor figure to Zack and others.

Belding may not factor into the reboot in any major way, though there are reasonable justifications for why that is. The first is that, at this point, the character is likely retired or at least far away from Bayside. At the end of Saved by the Bell: The New Class, Belding chooses to take accept a job as the dean of the University of Chattanooga in Tennessee. Despite his absence, Belding does get one prominent mention: Ronald Toddman (John Michael Higgins), who took over as the head of Bayside High, reveals late in the season that he used to be a student at the school. Cluelessly, Zack wonders if Toddman is actually Belding. The joke mainly reinforces that Zack is the worst, but it does suggest that Belding is alive and well.

In all likelihood, Belding remains off-screen because the reboot isn’t mainly centered around the returning characters. Zack and Kelly only appear in three episodes. And while Jessie and Slater do get more focus, their storylines are largely secondary to the main plot. The show instead devotes itself to the transfer students and how they deal with the far more privileged teenagers at Bayside. Similarly, a bulk of the first season centers around the racism and obstacles that the Black and Afro-Latina characters face in their new surroundings. It makes sense for Jessie and Slater to be included, since they’re employees of Bayside. Zack and Kelly, for their part, are parents to one of the new characters in the Saved By The Bell reboot. Belding’s involvement might have come across as forced, however, in a way that executive producer Tracey Wigfield was hoping to avoid.

The approach of focusing on a new generation has proved to be wise, with the reboot earning widespread critical acclaim for ably blending sentimentality with sharp social commentary. The novices to the franchise, such as Haskiri Velazquez and Josie Totah, have also been praised for quickly leaving a positive impression with their performances. This bodes well for Saved by the Bell to receive a renewal for season 2 by Peacock. If that happens, Wigfield has noted she’s open for other Bayside alums to make an appearance. It’s possible that Belding will get the chance to show up as well.
