Scarlet Witch’s new costume revealed in WandaVision episode 9 features a special tribute to Vision. After years of build-up, not only did Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) finally get her official superhero nickname, but the character was also given an outfit inspired by the Marvel Comics counterpart. The ninth episode, titled “The Series Finale,” was exactly that, the final installment in Disney+’s miniseries. Wanda was forced to say goodbye to the love of her life yet again, but her costume showed how much of an impact Vision made on her life.
After making her MCU debut as a prominent figure in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, Wanda has been making her case as one of the strongest figures in the franchise. While there were clear issues with the control of her powers, Wanda’s potential has been something to keep an eye on. Wanda was thrust back into the focus for WandaVision, which revealed how she manifested Vision (Paul Bettany) and transformed an entire suburban town due to her grief. Thanks to Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn), viewers were able to learn more about Wanda’s origins before she was given the name of “Scarlet Witch.” In doing so, the series also confirmed Wanda’s capability of Chaos Magic, cementing her place among the top in terms of powerful characters in the MCU.
Throughout Wanda’s arc up until WandaVision, the character was given outfits clearly inspired by Scarlet Witch’s comics get-up. As time went on, the costume evolved, but certain aspects were notably muted or left out altogether. Wanda’s Halloween costume in episode 6 was the closest Scarlet Witch came to her comic-accurate costume. WandaVision’s penultimate episode took that up a notch by teasing the final Scarlet Witch costume in Wanda’s vision while being exposed to the Mind Stone. The finale gave Wanda the full Scarlet Witch transformation when facing Agatha as a sign that Olsen’s character finally embraced her identity. The moment of evolution introduced a new costume, including a crown headpiece, boots, a gown, and gloves. As pointed out by a fan (via Reddit), the outfit also held an emotional tribute to Vision with her costume’s neckline design.
How Scarlet Witch’s Costume Connects To The Mind Stone
At the center of Scarlet Witch’s neckline was a cutout in the shape of the Mind Stone embedded in Vision’s forehead. The Mind Stone kept him alive until Thanos ripped it from the synthezoid’s body, causing his tragic death. When recreating Vision in Westview, Wanda made sure to keep this aspect of her love intact, as it became synonymous with the character. With this precise detail, Wanda proved she would be keeping his memory alive while coming to terms with the fact the Vision she fell in love with was gone.
The Mind Stone shape within the Scarlet Witch costume was also significant based on its connection to both Vision and Wanda. While the Infinity Stone was Vision’s power source, the same object unlocked Wanda’s latent powers when she was experimented on by HYDRA. Though the WandaVision reveal retconned Scarlet Witch’s origins in the MCU, it makes the Mind Stone’s link to Wanda even stronger considering a piece of it lives inside of her. The costume will remain a tribute to Vision while reminding Wanda how the Mind Stone affected her life.
