Now in its sixth and final season Schitt’s Creek, the Canadian sit-com about a wealthy family forced to rebuild their life in a rural small town, has drawn legions of fans to its quirky premise. Who hasn’t wondered what would happen if a prominent family like the Kardashians suddenly lost everything? Following the lives of video store magnate Johnny Rose, his soap opera star wife Moira, and their two adult children David and Alexis as they try to fit in with the locals of Schitt’s Creek has brought laughter, tears, and many, many memes.
David has been a standout character, played with neurotic aplomb by Daniel Levy (Eugene Levy’s son), who is a co-writer and co-creator of the series. Not only has he been responsible for some of the most verbally visceral exchanges on the show, he’s been the originator of some of its most iconic fashion ensembles. 10 NATURE CHILD
One of David’s many endearing qualities on Schitt’s Creek is his incredible naivety. Having lived a life of luxury, he had no concept of the world that Stevie, Roland, and the townspeople of Schitt’s Creek enjoyed. He could list the lines expected at New York Fashion Week but not hayseed varietals.
Stevie, the down-to-earth and easy going concierge of the Rosebud Motel outed his ineptitude during some of their early encounters in Season 1, which set the course for David’s slow progression to appreciating life outside the vapidness of former hollow existence.
9 RUMOR HAS IT
One of David’s biggest barriers is trusting people. Throughout the series, one of the emotional obstacles he’s had to overcome is believing that when people say something, they intend to follow up on it with their actions. This wasn’t the case for him and the people he consorted with in New York, and he can’t believe the people of Schitt’s Creek are so honest.
When people have talked about him in the past, it’s been to spread nasty rumors. Super sensitive to critique, David is supremely defensive against what he perceives as personal attacks. But ultimately to David there’s no such thing as bad news, and if people are talking about you around town, it must mean you’re someone important.
8 YOU ARE WHERE YOU SHOP
Like the rest of the Roses, David is used to the finer things in life. He’s used to driving exotic cars (or having someone else drive him in exotic cars), dining at the fanciest restaurants, and wearing the latest designer labels. When he moves into the Rosebud Motel, he has a hard time adjusting to what he perceives to be a pauper’s life.
When he begins an unlikely friendship with Stevie the concierge, it takes him some time to realize she’s not friends with him because he’s wearing pants that cost $850, but because she genuinely likes him. He still doesn’t forgive her for shopping at the Target clearance rack, though.
7 CASH POOR, SPIRIT WEALTHY
After living in Schitt’s Creek for a few months, David begins to realize that in order to make any sort of life for himself in the small town, he’s going to need to start budgeting his money. Having never had to be financial responsible, he begins to feel the strain of his lack of funds.
What David lacks in fiscal independence, he makes up for with his fashion sense. He’s able to parley his sense of style into a job at Blouse Barn, where his boss Wendy Kurtz makes him a brand manager. Using the skills he develops there, he later opens up his own shop called Rose Apothecary.
6 THE POWER OF A GOOD CRY
Of all the Roses, David knows the most about self care. Since everything in life gives him anxiety, he knows exactly what he needs to do to calm himself down. This is one of the reasons he opens Rose Apothecary, a shop filled with all the sort of lavender bath salts that Goop-loving yuppies will pay top dollar for.
When David’s feeling super stressed about his day, he already has his evening planned; he’s going to go home, pop a pill (something of the pharmaceutical variety), have a restorative cry, and then go to sleep early. Complete with face cream and eyemask, of course.
5 BASIC LIFE SKILLS
When Johnny Rose’s business partner took his video store empire for all it was worth, he had no idea how his family was going to survive. His wife Moira hadn’t had any new soap opera projects in years, and his two adult children had no life skills whatsoever.
Moving to Schitt’s Creek and being forced to manage the Rosebud Motel turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as Alexis was able to grow into a more compassionate, selfless person by working at a local veterinarian clinic, and David was able to eventually open his own wellness store.
4 JOB OFFERS
The entire Rose family is vain, with the exception of Johnny (how could he be, going to bed every night in that Ebeneezer Scrooge’s nightgown?). Between Moira’s wall o’ wigs, Alexis and her thousands of tangled tennis bracelets, and David’s monochromatic wardrobe, it’s hard to believe the Rose family lost any of their former wealth.
Even though they still dress, act, and present as though nothing about their life has changed, they all suffer the strain of their fiscal drop in society. David is forced to get a job eventually at the Blouse Barn once it’s mad clear he can’t do basic repair around the Rosebud Motel.
3 WHERE’S WIFI?
It takes a while living in Schitt’s Creek for David and the Roses to adjust to the slower pace of life. There’s no malls, no Starbucks, no nightclubs, and barely intermittent wifi. They’re forced to entertain themselves in ways that force them to grow and change as people.
At one point, David’s had enough, and runs away from the Rosebud Motel. He’s decided he needs to go back to New York, and if not there, anywhere than the place that’s slowly unraveling his sanity like the uneven hem on one of his Givenchy sweaters. He unironically flees to the live among the Amish, until his family tracks him down and forces him to come back.
2 CANADIAN NETFLIX
Every time that a new season of Schitt’s Creek drops, fans have to scramble to find a place to watch it. If they’re not lucky enough to live in Canada where it’s broadcast, they have to wait months until it’s released in the United States on Netflix.

1 WHAT’S THAT NOISE?
A little of the Roses goes a long way. Most of the things that David complains about Alexis and Moira doing, he does himself, and they all judge the people around them because of perceived social, physical, and mental deficiencies, which makes them come off as incredibly conceited.
It takes a long time for David and the rest of his family to become self aware, but the journey makes for some of the best material on the series. Each of them has to learn important lessons about treating others with kindness, compassion, and pity for their poor fashion choices.
