Schitt’s Creek sixth and final season aired in the spring of 2020, and fans are still distraught about the fact that the Rose family will not be returning to the small screen. In order the give the world an ending appropriate for this fictional family full of big personalities, Schitt’s Creek concluded with the much-anticipated gay wedding between David Rose and his beau Patrick Brewer.

The series finale of Schitt’s Creek is full of easter eggs. These subtle nods to previous episodes and jokes give fans exactly what they want: a nostalgic, emotional wrap to this hilarious, unique, and groundbreaking take on the sitcom.

10 David’s Happy Ending

After David and Patrick’s wedding venue gets rained out, Patrick plans a full-body massage for David while he looks for a new location. David receives a happy ending, which he assumes Patrick ordered for him.

It turns out Patrick did no such thing and that the masseuse took it upon himself to take David’s relaxation to the next level. Ending Schitt’s Creek on this free-wheeling note harkens back to David and Stevie’s experiences with Jake, the woodworker who dates them both at the same thing.

9 Alexis’s Wedding Gown Is A Reference To Season One

The dress Alexis wears to her brother’s wedding is a white, flowing gown that comes with a veil. Alexis realizes too late she’s wearing a wedding dress – which makes her look like the bride and David like the groom.

This mishap pays homage to an incident in the first season where locals mistook Alexis and David for a couple instead of siblings. It also pays homage to Alexis’s historic tendency to make everything about herself.

8 Moira’s Long Locks Are Inspired By Botticelli Paintings

When David and Patrick’s officiant and wedding haikuist Fabian drops out at the last minute, matronly Moira Rose steps into the role. Her papal attire takes her histrionic and theatrical nature to the next level.

It took quite some time to conceive of Moira’s final look, and she’s one of the few characters in sitcom history who can pull of wearing a pope’s outfit to a wedding. The large mitre on Moira’s head is offset by her long, blonde locks taken straight from Boticelli’s Italian Renaissance masterpiece The Birth of Venus.

7 The Jazzagals Revive Patrick’s Open Mic Performance

In season four, Patrick sings through his feelings for David by performing Tina Turner’s “Simply the Best” at the Rose Apotheocary’s Open Mic Night. Fans swooned over this sweet moment, and David later lip-synchs this tune for Patrick in another episode.

When David walks down the aisle in the finale, the Jazzagals sing “Simply the Best,” bringing his musical and romantic history with Patrick full circle. It doesn’t get much more heartwarming than that.

6 The Callback To David And Patrick’s Hike

Season five ends with Patrick proposing to David during a hike up his favorite mountain. “This just felt like the perfect place to ask you to marry me,” Patrick says before showing David the ring.

Patrick references the hike in his wedding vows, telling David he would climb 1,000 mountains for him. David may not be the consummate outdoorsman, but he sure appreciates the sentiment.

5 Stevie’s Maid Of Honor Suit

Stevie Budd and David come a long way in their friendship over Schitt’s Creek run. They both also come a long way in their individual development and growth.

Stevie’s Maid of Honor suit (in lieu of a dress) signals Schitt’s Creek desire to push the boundaries when it comes to sexual identity and expression. Just like David wears a skirt suit, Stevie dons a pants suit in an attempt to flip the narrative about fluidity and gender expectations.

4 The Mariah Carey Song Lyrics Used In Patrick’s Vows

At the end of season four, Patrick tells David, “You’re my Mariah Carey.” It makes sense that Patrick would quote the pop goddess during his wedding vows.

Patrick takes his love for David a step further by singing a few bars from Mariah’s hit, “Always Be My Baby.” Rumor has it everyone on set choked up while taping this scene.

3 A Throwback To Season’s Two Barn Party

The Jazagals kick off the wedding ceremony by performing the James Morrison song “Precious Love.” This is the same song the Roses dance along to in the season two finale, “Happy Anniversary.”

In the season two episode, the Roses celebrate Johnny and Moira’s wedding anniversary by attending Mutt Schitt’s barn party. This sweet moment showcases the family’s love for each other despite their nitpicky personalities and constant bickering.

2 Glimpsing David’s Sweater Collection

Fans get a glimpse of David’s massive and iconic sweater collection in the series finale. Neatly tucked and organized in a large shelving unit, the sweaters are a testament to David’s favorite form of self-expression.

From colorful to fuzzy to all black to lettered, David’s sweaters are up there with Moira’s wigs in terms of importance. Getting one final look at them all together is just what fans need.

1 All The Very Real Tears

The tears actually start flowing in the penultimate episode of season six, but they keep coming in the finale. Instead of being forced, the tears are very real, and they give fans a little taste of how the cast and crew were really feeling wrapping up their series and their characters’ lives in Schitt’s Creek.

The weepy, emotional exchanges between the characters were happening off-camera, as well. “It was really easy to cry that day,” Catherine O’Hara, who plays Moira, later shared in an interview.
