In the first season of Schitt’s Creek, the Rose family proved that they weren’t as close as they thought they were when they lost everything and landed in their new town. Being in conjoining motel rooms forced the family to get to know each other in a way that they hadn’t be able to when they had money. And while everyone became closer in a multitude of ways, there was something special between Johnny and David.

The father and son duo were closer than say, Johnny and Alexis, but there was still unspoken tension between the two. As the series went on to six successful seasons, Johnny and David became closer and genuinely enjoyed each other’s company. While they had their downfalls, they also had a bunch of sweet moments too.

10 Best: The Baseball Game

In season 5, Cafe Tropical went head to head against Bob’s Garage in a baseball game. David wanted no part in the game, but he was recruited when Cafe Tropical was down a player. Likewise, Ronnie asked Johnny to join her team when they were in the same boat. David was annoyed that he had to play, but Johnny viewed the game as a huge bonding moment between father and son. He tried teaching David a few things before the game and cheered him on while they played. When David hit the ball for the first time, Johnny looked as if he had never been prouder.

9 Worst: Johnny Needed David’s Paycheck

When David came into some money, Johnny viewed his income as collective considering the entire family was in need of extra funds. Fans were quick to criticize Johnny for taking away David’s hard-earned money and it caused a rift between the two.

As funny as the ATM scene between Johnny and David was, it showed how disconnected they were from each other. Money got in between their relationship.

8 Best: David’s Wedding Meal Tasting

As a gift for David and Patrick’s wedding, Johnny promised to pay for their food. However, after meeting the caterer and learning how costly the menu was, Johnny knew paying for the food was going to be a stretch. He talked about his frustrations with his situation to Stevie and it broke him that he wasn’t able to give David something he dreamed of. Patrick’s family was able to chip in, which lightened Johnny’s load, but that wasn’t the point. Johnny wanted to give his son the wedding of his dreams.

7 Worst: Christmas

After a few bad Christmases, Johnny woke up on Christmas Eve with the holiday spirit. He tried getting his family excited, but they needed more convincing. Johnny wanted to throw an impromptu holiday party with his family and the town but no one was willing to help out.

Johnny asked David to bring some of the Christmas decorations from Rose Apothecary to their motel room to brighten the place up. However, David wasn’t willing to help. He didn’t want to lose money by bringing his wares to the motel. Johnny was so depressed by the looks of his motel and family’s behavior that he went to Cafe Tropical to get away. The night had a happy ending but it was unfortunate that David didn’t want to help his dad at that moment.

6 Best: The Opening Of Rose Apothecary

It was a huge accomplishment for David to start his own business. After losing everything, David was a fighter and made himself into someone successful. Opening Rose Apothecary was scary, but it was something David needed to do.

On opening day, there was a line of people wrapped around the building. As Moira and Johnny walked into the modern-day general store, they were stunned by how many people loved it. They watched their son help patrons and look right at home around his products. Johnny never looked prouder of his son.

5 Worst: Accidentally Outting Patrick

When Johnny met Patrick’s parents for the first time, he was so excited that he couldn’t help but gush about Patrick. As sweet as Johnny’s compliments were, Patrick’s parents had no idea that their son was gay. To be fair, David also didn’t know that his boyfriend never came out to his parents, but he was annoyed that his dad accidentally ruined the weekend. With Patrick’s surprise birthday party hours away, David was worried that Johnny’s words dampened the night.

4 Best: When David Ran Away

When the Roses thought that they were selling the town to a wealthy buyer, they began preparing their exit from Schitt’s Creek. David had a harder time saying goodbye because he knew he didn’t have much waiting for him in New York. The thought of leaving his family and going to New York alone scared him and he ran away.

It took some time for Johnny to realize that David was gone, but when he did he lead the family to find him. Without Johnny and the help of Schitt’s Creek, David would still be with the Amish family.

3 Worst: David Left An Important Dinner Early

In the first season, the Roses wanted to sell the town as fast as they could so that they would have enough money to get out of there and back to normalcy. However, before they could sell the town, Roland Schitt needed to sign the contract first. Roland invited the Roses over for dinner to get the contract signed, and Johnny forced David to join them. Knowing how important the dinner was, Johnny begged David to be on his best behavior but the opposite happened. David was cold and left the dinner early. It didn’t leave the best impression for the Schitts.

2 Best: The Gift That Keeps On Giving

In the pilot, Johnny noted that he bought the town of Schitt’s Creek for his son’s birthday as a joke. David loathed Schitt’s Creek when he first got there, but after becoming friends with Stevie, he found a second home. By the end of the series, the Roses got back on their feet and everyone left town — except for David. In a full-circle moment, Johnny bought David the town, and David was the last one standing. Without Johnny buying Schitt’s Creek for David, who knows where the family would have ended up.

1 Worst: David’s Gallery

In “General Store,” David went to his mom about an idea for his own business. With the general store closing, David thought it was the perfect time to open his own store. He reminded his parents that he once ran a very prestigious art gallery in New York City and always did a great job of selling. Sadly, Moira told David that it was they who bought all those paintings. David wasn’t an excellent gallerist, he just had wealthy parents who wanted their son to look good. That moment rocked David — but it also lit a fire under him to do succeed.
