James Gunn reveals what would have been the plot for Scooby-Doo 3, and it’s pretty crazy. Long before he was known as the unique vision behind the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, widely regarded as some of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s best movies, Gunn wrote the screenplay for both 2002’s Scooby-Doo and its sequel Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed. Based on the long-running animated franchise of the same name, Scooby-Doo featured Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Matthew Lillard, and Linda Cardellini as live-action iterations of their famous Hanna-Barbera counterparts. Neil Fanning provided the voice of the titular dog. The film grossed $275 at the worldwide box office.

Gunn has since moved on to more high-profile gigs, bringing his unique perspective on film to the upcoming Suicide Squad sequel. But, every now and then, the writer and director is asked about his memories of working on the Scooby-Doo movies. Gunn even recently shared his view that writing Scooby-Doo helped to prepare him for the experience of directing Guardians of the Galaxy, noting that it helped provide him with the sense of confidence needed in order to helm a big tentpole project. He’s also received inquiries about what a third Scooby-Doo outing would have looked like. Now, we have a fairly definitive answer.

As part of a Q&A session on his Twitter, Gunn was asked about the plot of Scooby-Doo 3. In his reply, Gunn offers a detailed summary that builds to a crescendo of craziness. While everything about this potential Scooby-Doo adaptation sounds promising, the bit about Shaggy and Scooby having a crisis of faith is particularly intriguing. It likely means, among other possibilities, that the pair would give up their beloved Scooby Snacks. Check out Gunn’s entire response below.

The Mystery Ink gang are hired by a town in Scotland who complain they’re being plagued by monsters but we discover throughout the film the monsters are actually the victims & Scooby & Shaggy have to come to terms with their own prejudices & narrow belief systems. (Yes, Really!)

It’s worth noting that a third Scooby-Doo film was planned, with Gunn set to serve as writer and director. However, due to the financial disappoint of Scooby-Doo 2, the plans were eventually scrapped. Failing to meet studio projections, Scooby-Doo 2 earned $181.5 million against a $25 million budget.

The universe of Scooby-Doo lives on in other forms, of course. Scoob, featuring an all-star voice cast that includes Mark Wahlberg and Zac Efron, in addition to quirkier cameos from the likes of Simon Cowell and Ira Glass, was set to hit theaters in May before being delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Still, Gunn’s reveal about what he planned for Scooby-Doo 3 is undoubtedly in a category all its own. It would have been cool to see.
