Scott Pilgrim vs The World Ramonas 7 Evil Exes Ranked by Likability

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World has been hailed as a cult classic since its release in 2010. One of many films that employs the trope of the manic pixie dream girl, the movie follows clueless but endearing bassist Scott Pilgrim as he fights for the love and affection of a guarded and distant Ramona Flowers. To date Ramona, though, Scott must first defeat her seven evil exes.

Each ex that Scott faces off against has their own defining qualities, from rockstar to A-lister. More notably, each ex also varies in likability as they interact with Scott and Ramona. Here’s how Ramona’s seven evil exes rank in the film according to their likability.

6 Gideon

Gideon is the most unlikable of Ramona’s exes, as he is cocky to a level deeper than just outward masculinity like Lucas the A-Lister and Todd the Rockstar. Instead of his fists, Gideon uses his money and power and is the most manipulative toward Ramona, as he even puts a microchip in her head to literally control her.

Gideon also pats Ramona’s head and treats her more like a pet than a girlfriend, rarely even letting her talk. Gideon is charismatic, sure, and he gives The Sex Bob-ombs their big break, but he is also the mastermind behind the League of Evil Exes and will stop at nothing to control Ramona and defeat Scott.

5 Todd Ingram

Like Lucas, Todd is cocky and shows it. He’s also Envy’s bassist and puts up a cold and uninviting front when Scott meets their band backstage. Even worse, Todd knocks out Knives aggressively (and unnecessarily) with a smirk, saying, “I’m not afraid to hit a girl, I’m a rockstar.” He seems like a toxic ex-boyfriend and an even more toxic boyfriend, as Ramona said he’d punched a hole in the moon for her when they were dating, and they hated everyone else while they were together.

Todd’s cool factor is his hair, which comes with his vegan powers that Scott deftly strips away by tricking him into drinking half-and-half. Like Lucas, Todd loses to Scott’s mind games (which aren’t exactly ingenious), and he is his own demise. Maybe Todd’s choice to make veganism his personality trait didn’t exactly work out for the best.

4 Lucas Lee

Perhaps Lucas’ only personality trait is that he is cocky and full of himself. When Scott first sees the actor on set, Lucas says action before the director can even say it. He’s a narcissistic self-proclaimed A-lister who gets his knuckles polished by a PA on set after every punch he throws at Scott. While these bold character traits lead to an upbeat and comedic second battle for Scott, Lucas practically beats Scott to a pulp with the help of his stunt doubles.

With an unfair advantage of a group of Lucas’s versus one Scott, even Lucas himself admits “I’m nothing without my stunt team.” He doesn’t give a very likable first impression, nor does he change anyone’s mind with his haughtiness that ends up leading to his own demise.

3 Roxy Richter

Roxy puts up a convincing fight as she engages both Ramona and Scott in physical combat. The most redeeming factor about Roxy as an “evil ex” is that even though she is ready to fight Scott when she stops him on the road as he sulks over an unresponsive Ramona, she grants him his request to postpone the fight for later. She hissed a warning that she’d go after him, but she nevertheless did not take him while he was down and instead reappeared later.

Roxy’s weakness – the back of her knees – also makes her a likable antagonist as she displays a humanized element of emotion that no one else has shown – love. Roxy’s last line before she dies is, “You’ll never be able to do this to her,” a more passionate last breath than all of Ramona’s other exes.

2 Katayanagi Twins

Ramona’s next two exes, the Katayanagi Twins, occur later in the movie, but they do not engage in physical hand-to-hand combat with Scott. Instead, they fight with their music in a battle-of-the-bands type of combat. The twins are well-known musicians equipped with a weapon of a stereo system behind them, but Scott and The Sex Bob-ombs put up a fight with their own music. The ensuing battle is an entertaining duel of two holograms of their music waves, and neither party really gets physically hurt.

The Katayanagi are not as funny as Matthew Patel, as little of their personality shines through in their battle scene, but they are also not despicably violent towards Scott as the other exes are. They let their music do the fighting and leave it at that.

1 Matthew Patel

Ramona’s first evil ex Matthew Patel is the perfect introduction for what’s to come for Scott Pilgrim. He strikes the ideal balance between “antagonist” as he fights hand-to-hand with Scott and comic relief as he interjects with conversational comments throughout their combat (and also had the decency to invite Scott to battle in a rather cordial email before his appearance).

Ramona says the reason she was so attracted to Matthew in the seventh grade is that “Matthew was the only non-white, non-jock boy in town” who didn’t overwhelm her on the playground. Matthew is personable and funny, despite being an “evil ex,” which makes him a very likable antagonist and also makes his fight against Scott more enjoyable.
