Scream The Actresses Who Almost Played Sidney Prescott

Neve Campbell is one of the most iconic “Final Girls” in horror movie history with her portrayal as Sidney Prescott in the Scream franchise but the role almost went to another actress. The first film, which debuted in 1996, was directed by Wes Craven and written by Kevin Williamson. The slasher introduced the world to Ghostface before spawning three sequels and another reportedly on the way. Thus far, Campbell has appeared in every Scream movie installment.

At the center of most horror slashers is a young girl being terrorized by a sadistic killer. In Scream, that position went to Sidney, a 17-year-old from the town of Woodsboro, California. The teen lived a somewhat ordinary life except for the fact that her mother was brutally murdered a year prior to the events of the film. She and her classmates were then targeted by Ghostface but she wound up getting the upper hand. History repeated itself in Scream 2 but this time, Ghostface carried out a killing spree at Sidney’s college campus. In Scream 3 and Scream 4, Sidney experience more death when family members turned out to be the figures behind the mask.

Campbell’s portrayal as Sidney has spanned nearly two and a half decades, and that could possibly grow if she reprises her role for Scream 5. Despite being the female lead of the horror franchise for so long, a number of other actresses could have had that opportunity. Before Campbell was cast, a number of young actresses were considered including Alicia Witt, Brittany Murphy, Melissa Joan Hart, and Resse Witherspoon. Molly Ringwald was also looked at she declined the opportunity since she didn’t want to play a teenager while in her late twenties. Aside from these names, one specific actress, Drew Barrymore, was actually given the role of Sidney but was forced to take a smaller role in the film.

Drew Barrymore Nearly Had The Lead Role In Scream

Rather than follow the lead of horror movies that came before, Scream wanted bigger names in their cast. Thankfully, Barrymore read the script and approached the producers about playing the lead. She was quickly signed on for the role of Sidney and Barrymore’s involvement helped attract other notable actors. With Barrymore’s demand high, scheduling conflicts arose and she had no choice but to take a step back from Scream. Rather than exit the film altogether, Barrymore agreed to play the role of Casey Becker, allowing her to film her scenes in less than a week.

Barrymore’s transition to playing Casey meant that the Scream team needed another female lead. They noticed Campbell’s work on Party of Five in which she presented a sense of innocence. It also helped that Campbell was familiar with Skeet Ulrich, who went on to play her on-screen love interest in Scream. The pair previously worked together on The Craft, another film that premiered in 1996. Campbell was a bit reluctant to take the role but seeing as it was her first chance at the lead, she couldn’t turn it down. The rest was history for Campbell and even though Barrymore didn’t have a chance to play Sidney, she will always be remembered as having an iconic role in the franchise.
